Boys & Girls: JA Merida XXXV Copa Mundial Yucatan, Mexico, clay (Week 47)

A stronger field for the Mexican Grade A event, which means Ella McDonald drops down to 4th seed (top seed in the Grade 1).  Phoenix Weir, Henry Searle and Imogen Haddad are the only Brits on today's schedule   Mimi Xu has a tough looking draw against a girl who played Kaitlin Quevedo (last week's winner) in a couple of finals over the summer, winning one and losing one.  Isabelle Lacy will play Kaitlin in round 2 if both win their openers.

Boys R1 (L64)

Phoenix Weir v Volodymyr Iakubenko (UKR)

(WC) Luca Lemaitre Vilchis (MEX) v Hugo Coquelin

Duncan Chan (CAN) v Henry Searle

Evan Wen (USA) v Luca Pow

Girls R1 (L64)

Valeria Ray (USA) v (16) Mingge Xu

Ava Krug (USA) v Imogen Haddad

Isabelle Lacy v (Q) Aimee Reynoso (MEX)

Daria Yesypchuk (UKR) v (4) Ella McDonald

Hephzibah Oluwadare v Brooke Lynn Schafer (USA)

Of the three playing, just Henry progressed.

Shame for Imogen, who lost 5-7 in the third

She also lost in the doubles, as did Isabelle and partner

But Ella & Mimi got a win

As did Phoenix & Luca, and Hugo & Henry

A worrying fourth consecutive defeat at Grade 2 level or higher for Phoenix, all against players of similar or lower ranking.

(WC) Luca Lemaitre Vilchis (MEX) v Hugo Coquelin
Henry Searle d. Duncan Chan (CAN) 6-3 6-3
Evan Wen (USA) v Luca Pow

Girls R1 (L64)

Valeria Ray (USA) v (16) Mingge Xu
Ava Krug (USA) d. Imogen Haddad 6-0 2-6 7-5
Isabelle Lacy v (Q) Aimee Reynoso (MEX)
Daria Yesypchuk (UKR) v (4) Ella McDonald
Hephzibah Oluwadare v Brooke Lynn Schafer (USA)

Pity about Imogen Haddad, a few wins at these Mexican tournaments might have pushed her towards a qualifying place for AO, assuming she would have wanted to take part.

That's a very impressive win for Henry against the JWR33. Luca has a tough assignment against the second seed playing on home soil.

Boys R2

Henry Searle d. (4) Paul Barbier Gazeu (FRA) 6-2 6-1
Luca Pow v (2) Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez (MEX)

Isabelle was due to play Quevedo in the second round, so she's got a much better match up on paper against Yujin Kim JWR 207.

Excellent for Henry. Some decent points should take him into the top 200 - around 190 - a new career high.

It's difficult to know from bits and pieces but Henry was very impressive at the start of the year, in the UK event when he so nearly beat Damm. He's had a few less impressive looking results in juniors since then. But the Damm match sticks in my mind - got good hopes for him.

Mimi and Ella won their openers - Mimi took 3 sets but Ella wins easily. Both of them, plus Isabelle, play again tonight
