Boys & Girls: J5 Loughborough, GB - hard (indoor) (Week 37)

There's obviously a very large turnout of GB players here

In both the girls and boys there are four top-1000 ranked players (all British):

Daniela Piani (542), Scarlett Perkins (547), Abby Kelliher (747), Mia Wainwright (804)

Luca Bluett (558), Luke Hooper (754), Tom Aston (783), Kyle McKay (916)

Seven GB lads through the qualis and into the main draw

And eight out of eight girls

In the girls, the wildcards go to some of our young LTA selected stars, namely:

Mika Stojsavljevic

Arabella Loftus

Heidi Crncan

Amalia Widdowson

In the boys, there are ZERO wildcards - obviously no one that the LTA thought were any more deserving than anyone else - just play it out.....

Interesting R1 results in the girls:

Mika Stojsavljevic (2008), who looked very good in the team event in summer with Hannah, thrashed 2nd seed, Abby Kelliher

The other wildcard top 2008-er, Arabella Loftus, also won

Isabella Britton (2008), and a fave of mine, won too, beating a Dutch girl.

In terms of seeds, Daniela Piani (1), Scarlett Perkins (3) and Mia Wainwright (4) all won

But Lucia Cassidy (5) lost, as well as Abby (2)

Our U14 girls' champion, Eloise Newberry, lost very easily to Brooke Black who is, I think, one year older

Other youngsters like Sophia Kovacheva won

All the boys' seeds won

Boys:

Congrats to Max Carrier, age 15, the only non-seed to get a win today in the boys AND against a 'pesky' youngster

The QFs are now 100% British, which will be nice points guaranteed, with the seven seeded players and Max

Girls:

This summer's little fave, Isabelle Britton (2008) got an excellent win over the 7th seed, Amalia Widdowson

Mika Stojsavljevic (2008) - who has good potential - also won

But Arabella Loftus (2008) lost, as did Sophia Kovacheva (2008)

One year up, other fave, Dani Piani (2007), won but she's top seed so more expected

Mia W and Brooke Black, both 2007, won

As did Scarlett Perkins and Louise Booker who are a couple of years older

The QFs then have one foreign player, from Hong Kong, two GB players born in 2008, and three GB 2007-er players

That's decent use of a J5

Amalia Widdowson hasn't played much this year. I wonder if she's been dealing with injuries.

Girls:

Am excited - young Isabelle Britton who showed SO much talent this summer has beaten the top seed, Dani Piani who herself is a promising player, in two sets

She's now through to the semis.

Extremely natural ball striker. Agressive. Had vision.

Mika, another very competent 2008-er, lost 4-6 in the third against the HK girl

So the semis are:

Isabelle v Mia Wainwright

Louise Booker v HK player

Boys:

Again, pleased, Alex Okonkwo has beaten the 8th seed so the semis are:

(1) Luca Bluett v Alex

(2) Luke Hooper v (4) Kyle McKay

With apologies to Luca, who I don't know, but I'm even more pleased now as Alex O (unseeded) has made the final:

Boys SFs:

Alex Okonkwo (age 17) def. (1) Luca Bluett 6-3 6-4

(4) Kyle McKay (age 16) def. (2) Luke Hooper 6-4 6-2

Boys FINAL: Alex Okonkwo (age 17) v (4) Kyle McKay (age 16)

Both Alex and Kyle are in the doubles final, although not together:

Dubs Final:

Alex & Leonardo Santoro-Fergusson (a new name to me - the lad is playing his first ever ITF event from what I can see) v Kyle & MarcusMcLaren

Mia Wainwright has won a few Nationals in her time - very good player.  Good win for her.
