Boys & Girls: 2022 US Open (Week 36)

Ella takes the first set on a tiebreak. She started a bit slowly but has become more aggressive as the match has gone on. One break up in the second set but they're breaking each other's serves quite often so doesn't necessarily mean a lot.

Unfortunately Ella loses the second set and is 0-3 down in the final set.

I loved Colette's interview with the young American, and her whole thought process of what it feels like to come back from 0-5 15-40 down and win:

"Yes, Iva Jovic did come back from 5-0, 40-15 down in the third set against No. 5 seed Solana Sierra of Argentina in the second round of the US Open Junior Championships Monday evening at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

But no one was more surprised at that incredible comeback than she was.

"It was 5-0, 40-15 and I was one point from being out 6-0 in the third, but I won that game, and I'm like ok, whatever," said the 14-year-old wild card from Torrance California, still nearly breathless with disbelief.

"Great, I'm not getting bageled today, and then I won another game, 5-2, but you're not doing this, I thought. Then at 5-3, I was like, ok, if you can break her here, maybe you have a shot to get to 5-all. I started to believe a little bit. Then at 5-4, I'm like, oh my god. And then I said, you're going to get to 5-4 just to lose it at 6-4, that's exactly what's going to happen to you. Then I won that game, and I was like, what's going on? I was a little flustered at 5-all and missed two returns, but I held easy, played a good service game and I was just flipping out in the tiebreaker."

Jovic trailed 7-4 in the tiebreaker, with Sierra, the Roland Garros girls finalist and a semifinalist here last year, serving. But three errors by Sierra later, Jovic was even, and after another exchange of errors it was 8-8. Sierra held when Jovic netted a backhand down the line, but Jovic saved her third match point with an ace down the T. Sierra netted a backhand to give Jovic a 10-9 lead, and then double faulted to end the two-hour and 32-minute match."

A real shame for Ella. She couldn't get her serve going consistently in the second set but there was certainly not a big gulf between them.

Ranah and Patrick are currently on court. Ranah is 6-3 2-6 and the third set is available on Amazon Prime with US commentators
Patrick is 4-6 3-3 having converted just 1/13 breakpoints in set 1

Big win for Ranah 6-3 2-6 6-4 against the Wimbledon champion. Had a slight edge in power and 110mph serving (though she was unable to land first serves when serving for it at 5-3). Hovde looked as is weighed down by the expectancy, played safe at the end and Ranah came up with three good winners. She will be back later on for round 3.

Patrick lost 6-4 6-4

Hovde was very messy. Ranah did well though.  I watched the early and late parts of the match.

LOVE the fact that the other international tennis forum sites all had Hovde as a shoo-in

And Ranah has got them rocked back on their heels

She has so much natural talent, and so much improvement she can make too - the combination is exciting .....

Ranah should be back late evening British time against Kayla Cross (WTA843) who took out a Danish seed (the one Ella beat in the Dominican Republic G2 final)

R3

Kayla Cross (CAN) v Ranah Stoiber

Watched some of both these matches between meetings, fantastic win for Ranah!! Used to see Patrick training years ago, IMO hes not developed any big weapons, so wondering if hes planning to go the college route or will try and transfer to the mens tour??

He's pretty slight with, as you say, no major weapons, neither individually nor in terms of overall game. He's got some good qualities but it's very hard to see him playing men's pro fulltime at the moment.
