August 2022 British Player of the Month Vote

So heres the thing. We seem to be failing a little in getting votes in for this player of the month vote and, frankly , Im disappointed. Im very grateful that 33 people take the time to vote and seem to enjoy it.

But I feel like we can do better - according to my counter at the bottom 1074 people visited the forum in the past 24 hours. I reaiise all arent members, but 33 voted. Thats around 3 percent of people coming here. The most weve ever had is 40 and 33 is around average.

It probably sounds slightly narcissistic and Im sorry for that - but I think I could do better and am not really sure what else to do to attract voters.

I dont want to change the process this year too much but when the year is done , perhaps it needs a rethink - maybe a change of person doing the PoM process would help create new ideas and, whereas last year i considered that as I was tired, maybe this year it just needs freshening up and new guidance.

In the meantime anyone with any ideas welcome to comment - it feels like our best players each
Month deserve more than 30-40 votes to be truly recognised and thats what Id like to discuss and get feedback on.

Particularly those who dont vote - Id be keen to know what might help to vote more often ?

Jon, we have had 99 registered members logi n since you posted this competition. So 2/3rds of those didn't vote, which I find very sad. I don't think you can really do a lot more to persuade people to vote.

That is definitely disappointing TA, I hadnt realised that. Those 66 may all have good reasons - perhaps some don't spot it, in the General section, some dont participate generally, some may not like polls as a concept or voting etc. But it does feel to me that 33 could so easily be more, 66 voting would be great.

I try and drum up interest and post a lot of updates, not because I really want people to be updated, they can generally check for themselves if they wish to, but more to keep it advertised as the vote goes through - and it is a little tiring and intrusive to be honest, both on my time and I am sure for others who read my post and think, "there goes Jon again".

Genuinely, any ideas welcomes and perhaps, most importantly, feedback from those 66 who didnt vote - if not, might you do in the future and what can we do to make it more attractive to you to vote?

I think you do enough to advertise it, if people don't want to participate then that is fine but those of us that do, enjoy it (even when people vote for the wrong player!!!)

Ha - I probably take it too personally, its partly pride I am sure but also because I think it would be so much more interesting and the result more valid if 99 people voted as opposed to 33. This one for example, 90 percent had voted within 12 hours and we had a very slow end to the thing. I could shorten the vote but not everyone is here all the time and so 24 hours or so gives everyone a chance of passing by and voting , depending on the rhythm of their lives. and shortening it would probably reduce the votes as opposed to increase it.

Ill persevere away !

Would still like to hear from a non voter or two though, even if a PM is preferred as opposed to posting openly.

This. Yes, keep reminding folk, Jon, but otherwise I think everything involved in the process is fine. I can't really see what more you could do and thank you again.

Yes, thanks Indy, Emmsie and others. It is more born of a slight frustration. I think we get the PoM results broadly correct, but when someone wins with 16 votes out of 33 cast, it feels like it is not quite the vote of support these players deserve. I am not aware of any other PoM polls for British players, nor official ones, so if this is as good as it gets, and we have 66 folks each month who come by but dont vote, it feels like we are missing a trick - both in terms of giving it that seal of approval and, selfishly, in terms of making the process more exciting - if we had 100 people voting and votes coming in every few minutes, it would be a big step up and much more satisfying!

Meanwhile, we have 5 votes to come this season:

September Player of the Month - October 2nd

October Player of the month - October 30th

November/December Player of the month - 11th December

Player of Season Wildcard Vote - 13th December

PLAYER OF SEASON 2022 Vote - 15th to 18th December

Player of the Season feels wide open this year and could be the most interesting vote we have had, let's see if any of the above votes can get us back above the 40 mark or even 50, that will make me much happier!!

You put a lot of effort into these polls and I really appreciate the fun of expressing admiration for the various players and their efforts each month. Do I always vote? No! Sometimes just not particularly interested. I would be wary of you trying to drum up more votes from outwith our core group. Quantity is not always quality. If say 33 people vote each month at least you can be sure that they have given careful thought and weighed up the relative achievements of players whether it be winning a first 25k title or beating a top 50 player.
So I would say your voting system is fine and enjoyable for those who choose to participate. Doesnt matter that some choose not to.
Best wishes
Canda

Apologies for voting late, I managed to exceed my network data allocation for the month just at the critical time, missed the vote deadline, and have been cut off from the world. Pleased to find that the ladies have taken gold and silver for the August POM, and that Harriet is staking a claim early on for September's comp.

Thank you so much Canda- wise words and I have reconciled my thoughts in the background to align.

I like the quality not quantity perspective, I would probably like just a little more quantity, without detracting from the quality, but my view now is onwards!

Thanks for yours and others support , it is appreciated!

Lovely to see the vote has crept up to 36 , sadly its all done and dusted. Maybe my approach for the future will be to leave the vote open for a month or so!

I also wish the poll closure dates selections would actually work for me when I set them - Indy, if you read this , would you mind setting it as an admin to close, hopefully that will work like it has in the past!
