Boys & Girls: J1 Durban, South Africa, hard (Week 31)

It's difficult to tell from the audio as there's lots of background noise but I think the umpire just said Ellie had taken the first set but was down 5-2 in the second. I think Ellie might be a bit frustrated with her opponent though, as she just complained about a perfectly reasonable call which led to Ellie winning the point and then winning the game, breaking serve in the next point, but was right by the umpire who could have overruled. She said to the Serbian girl that it was a fair call and why was she begging! .

Now one set all for Ellie's match.

One thing about her game is that she's hardly won any points at all at the net. I wonder if she plays any doubles at all.

Ive seen Ellie come to the net in a few points and finish it off and win the point.

Yes, she's not great, is she - it could really be improved

Another thing which struck me, based on the bits I was watching, is that whenever she has a ball to attack on her forehand, she 90% of the time does so with an inside out forehand. It's not a bad shot (although she often doesn't really get the angle she needs - seems to open her wrist a bit, maybe?) but it's SO predictable, the other girl is always over that side - she really needs to balance it out with crosscourt ones more, to keep her opponent honest

But she's making a great effort

My favourite bit is that she calls herself 'Els' as in 'Oh, Els!!!!' when something goes wrong

You just want to shout out 'Bells' afterwards :)

Lol! It's really heating up a bit. She's quite feisty with the umpire.

Four breaks of serve in the first four games of the final set.

Shes known for being loud and feisty, it looked to have intimidated her opponent  in yesterdays match. Back in the UK the players are used to it from her and not so easily rattled.

Yes, but who is calling the lines here???

Why is Ellie calling the lines here, if there's a chair umpire?

A shame she lost 2-6 in the final set. Still a very good week and she'll go quite far up the rankings. As CD said, there's lot she can work on in her game.

Ella takes the first set 6-3. The South African Broadcasting Corporation are broadcasting the final, with South African commentators - one source for those wanting to watch in the UK is their Twitter feed

Thanks, David - I'd assumed it was raining as it wasn't on Curro !

Go, Ella

Ella takes her first Grade 1 title with a steady performance always in control - her opponent was more up and down, playing some good points but hindered by 12 double faults and an abdominal strain

F

(1) Ella McDonald d. Darja Suvirdjonkova (SRB) 6-3 6-2
