The scenic Klosters is the traditional venue for the under 18 European Championships which start tomorrow. The fields are packed with top juniors, so it will be tough for any of our representatives (only 2 are allowed for most countries) to make much progress. Live scores should be available here with Phoenix and Talia up first (8am BST) and Luca on 4th

Luca faced the toughest opener of the 4, and wasn't able to find a way past the seed. Ella and Talia are seeded 13 in doubles and made a winning start. Tomorrow Phoenix is first up (8am BST) on court 1 while the girls are fifth on courts 2 & 3 (all streamed courts)

Ella McDonald v (9) Kristyna Tomajkova (CZE)
Im not overly surprised at those results. The UK players certainly those in the midlands and north have had very little exposure on the clay. Loughborough certainly doesnt have clay courts, Talia hasnt played on clay in a year, Luca almost a year. Phoenix had some matches this year and Ella did do the clay swing prior to Wimbledon. But its always a tough ask when we send our players overseas to these events with just a few days on clay a year.
Bit of a shame then that Matilda didn't want to play/wasn't chosen to play/is not doing any of this sort of thing any more
If none of our girls can play on clay, then at least chose your one girl who actually can
I guess your argument about the results being due to no clay also applies to Mimi, and Isabelle, and also Mika and Hannah? (Although possible less for Hannah if she's near the NTC and uses that court?)
Seems ridiculous that Loughborough doesn't have any clay courts....
Just Ella left in singles, and a tough match in prospect

Ella McDonald v (9) Kristyna Tomajkova (CZE)
Well it proved tough - for the Czech girl Ella's best win rankings wise on clay (she has a top 20 win from the Dominican Republic final earlier in the year on hard). Ella's next opponent hasn't done much in juniors, but has reached a 15K final recently to give her a WTA ranking inside 1000
R3
Ella McDonald d. (9) Kristyna Tomajkova (CZE) 6-1 6-4
Ella continues her impressive run, swatting aside the Greek girl. Not only that but she and Talia are through to the doubles semis as well (opponents to be determined). Further progress in singles will be very tough though. Her quarter-final opponent has had a very good year in junior ITFs on clay in particular, winning 20/22 including the strong Milan Grade A title. Her only defeats in junior clay matches have been to Sofia Costoulas (JWR3) and Sara Bejlek (WTA 181).
Playing a Swiss opponent means she gets to play on the streamed court 1 (second match)
If they've beaten the French team (the girls with the horrible long names ), doesn't that mean they're in the QFs?
Although I'm a bit confused, I thought from the ticker board that the match against the French team hadn't even been played yet....
They have won 2 matches today - easily beating the long names, then a match tiebreak against the Czech 6th seeds. Their semi will be on court 3 (streamed) later tomorrow
