13:45 - BRITISH GIRLS MARCH ON
There's been a trio of impressive wins by British girls this morning: Hannah Klugman continued her progress at the 14&U event in Most, ousting tenth seed Angelica Sara (ITA) 7-5 6-1. At the 16&U event in Prerov, Mingge Xu upset second seed Rose Marie Nijkamp 7-6(3) 6-3. And in Klosters Ella McDonald (pictured) has yet to lose a set, today beating Dimitra Pavlou (GRE) 6-1 6-2.
Like Hannah, Alena Kovackova a fair bit taller and more 'grown-up' since January and Les Petits As (where she lost - JUST - to the eventual winner, Stusek, who beat Hannah)
Very solid player - quite smart too - Hannah's going to have to work hard to beat her
Hannah made a few loose errors at the start but seems to have settled now
Hannah broke back, but got broken again, and lost the first set 4-6, which was a fair score.
Hannah was just a little impatient at times, a few sloppy errors on return of serve, and Alena has good reflexes, and is efficient at picking up the ball and re-directing it
She has pretty decent technique for clay, doesn't look lost like a couple of our players did.
But it rather neutralises a lot of her advantage, and so makes it all a lot more difficult, to re-set within a point and start from scratch - she's not used to it...
First time I've seen Alena play - impressive. Rare Hannah is beaten but I can see why.
Mika's forehand is very strong although her backhand is less controlled and erratic.
That's funny - I like her backhand more than the forehand , especially the whippy crosscourt one
Although both break down when she's not properly positioned and balanced - she lurches or hops, depending whether she's too close or too far from the ball
But she has the makings of strong ground shots, and a strong serve - and I guess she's born in the latter half of 2008, as the ITF site says she's still 13 - so she's one of the younger ones (don't know if there are other 2009-ers apart from Hannah - I assume there must be a couple)
I don't completely follow all this but I see that Hannah, Mika and Arabella Loftus have been selected as our team for the World Tennis Finals U14 in August ....
Slightly surprised that Isabelle Britton didn't get the call up over Arabella ??? She certainly did better in Junior Junior Wimbly...

Yeah there was a little chat about this on the first page of this thread. Not sure Ive heard of Arabella tbh before this event
She was in the U14 Junior Wimbledon, as was Isabelle - I see quite a few people are surprised that Arabella got the call up over Isabelle - but, hey, there are lots of factors in play .....
PS sorry for the duplication
