Is it not a little concerning that every British boy in the draw is a wildcard? Is there a derth of talent on the junior boys side right now?
Yes, we've been saying for a while that the current cohort are not that exciting.
That applies to the 2004s (Will Jansen is the best grass courter of that older lot, IMO) - also the 2003s, although they're not juniors any more - and they're not really much in the way of 2005s either (Phoenix would be the exception, IMO)
However, we've only got one girl as a direct entry too - all the rest are wildcards
Not much consolation but just to say it's not all rosy there either if you're looking at direct entries....
I don't really see any major GB hopes on the boys side in the younger ones either at the moment (although I hope paulisi is right). That said, I haven't seen Oliver Bonding play and am hoping to do so on TV. (This is definitely different from the girls where our younger group are very interesting)
Just out of interest, it's worth noting re the boys, the junior rankings of our main draw adult players this year:
Junior Career High Ranking
Andy Murray - 2
Dan Evans - 10
Liam Broady - 2
Cam Norrie - 10
Ryan Peniston - 460
Jay Clarke - 15
Ali Gray - 52
Paul Jubb - 384
Jack Draper - 7
So, it's clear that, in GB, junior ranking is important - 5 out of 9 were top 10, 6 out of 9 were top 20.
However, there are two complete outliers - Ryan and Paul - so juniors is not the be all and end all.
(Also, and conversely, unfortunately, there are lots of GB juniors who were top 10 or top 20 but who never achieved anything much in adult tennis)
Anyway, net net, I agree with you, ginger, the current boys group is not one that you can get very excited about (Phoenix and Henry are two that I follow more than others)
I'm interested whether Ryan and Paul played much junior tennis, so whether their low scores are through lack of success or lack of playing? Anyone know?

They both played a modest amount of junior tennis, but Ryan has indicated that he was hampered by being very small (though equally saying that it may have been a blessing, as he worked on some skills more than his compatriots) as a result of his early chemo, so it was very late growth that took him up to six foot and able to compete better (as a pro). Paul stopped playing juniors around his 17th birthday, but both won more matches than they lost in ITF juniors.
Patrick and Luca are available on BBC website streams (Luca a break up, Patrick a break down)
But it was a good 'honest' match - he played his level - it was good, committed tennis - he came very very close in the second but his opponent had a bit more firepower and the third was always going to be a big struggle
Henry Searle battling against the number two seed. He's 6-5 up on serve in the second set, having lost the first set. He seems to have quite a rowdy fan club, I'm not sure if it's his family or just the crowd who've adopted him.
Now a tiebreak. Come on Henry

I thought Phoenix's match was a bit disappointing.
He showed some good skills, here and there, came in at times, accelerated the ball well, but it was all so spotty, with no real base to construct his tennis from
Henry, however, played a really good match - against such an opponent, he should be pleased
Will becomes the first British boy through to round 2 winning 7-5 7-6(2) against a small Bolivian who was surprisingly accomplished on the grass (though he played a poor tiebreak)
