Boys: 2022 European Summer Cups - U12/U14/U16/U18

In 2020 the European Summer Cups were cancelled while in 2021 some countries, including GBR, opted out because of Covid.  Hence this is the first time in 3 years that there is British participation.  The under 14s have just started their qualification groups, with 8 nations qualifying for the finals next weekend (2 from each of 4 qualifying groups).  We are top seeded in a group based in France, and Mark Ceban, Liam Channon and Kouros Anssarizadeh take on Israel today, needing to beat them and their next opponents to qualify for the European finals. 6 of the 8 European finalists will qualify for the World Junior Team finals in the Czech Republic in August.

Kouros Anssarizadeh is a new name to me (and instantly assigned to the 'copy-and-paste-only' names )

Great to see - will go and google

No I hadn't heard of Kouros either - but he won't be needed to secure the win today. Liam (2 & 0 ) and Mark (4 & 3) ensure a winning 2-0 lead against Israel. one more win against Portugal or Finland to qualify for next weekend.

Good news as the boys qualify for the European finals thanks to a 3-0 win over Portugal (Liam winning 3 & 1, Mark 2 & 4) so play Italy for seeding rights

A narrow defeat for the boys who have a winner takes all match against Switzerland, who have the JWR2 (Flynn Thomas) but not much back-up seemingly. Six teams qualify for the world finals - the 4 winners today plus whoever wins the consolation matches tomorrow

(3) Slovenia 2 GBR 1

Liam Channot beat Svit Suljic 7-5 6-3
Mark Ceban lost to Ziga Sesko 5-7 4-6

Our under 12 team (Niall Pickerd-Barrua, Denzell Darkey and Neo Armus) have been attempting to qualify for their finals. However 2-1 defeats to Slovenia and the Czech Republic, coupled with a 2-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, mean they only finish third in their round robin, so cannot qualify (they play Ireland for 5th/6th in their qualifying play-off zone)

Under 16 and under 18 qualifying starts tomorrow, with the under 16s having the incentive of Junior Davis Cup places for 5 teams from the European finals. Realistically both squads will do well to reach the European finals, given the strength of some of the opposition. The under 16s (Viktor Frydrych, Oliver Bonding and Henry Searle) are in Italy and start against North Macedonia. Phoenix Weir, Luca Pow and Hugo Coquelin represent the under 18s in Slovakia (no draw up yet)

The under 18s played an understrength Croatia side and managed a 2-1 win after sharing two tight 3 setter singles. To qualify for the finals though they will have to beat Slovakia tomorrow, who have two top 50 players in their squad The under 16s found North Macedonia easy opposition, but to qualify for the finals they will need to beat second seeds Poland tomorrow. Although their squad is all higher ranked, two of them have achieved that ranking primarily in weaker Tennis Europe U16 events - so they are a much better draw than top seeds Italy.

U18 qualifying QF

GBR 2 Croatia 1

Luca lost to Noa Vukadin 3-6 7-5 6-7(4)
Phoenix beat Patrik Jurina 3-6 7-6(6) 6-4
Hugo/Luca beat Vasung/Vukadin 6-2 6-4

U16 qualifying QF

GBR 3 North Macedonia 0

Henry beat Filip Stojanovski 6-2 6-1
Viktor beat Amar Huseinovic 6-2 6-1
Oliver/Henry beat Jankuloski/Stojanovski 6-4 6-0

Excellent news from Italy where Viktor upset the Polish number 1, higher ranked and with more clay court pedigree, to ensure they reach the European finals. They play Italy or Israel tomorrow for seeding rights. The under 18s lost out, though Luca upset the Slovakian number 3, ranked just outside the top 100

U16 qualifying SF

GBR 3 (2)Poland 0

Henry beat Mateusz Lange 6-4 6-1
Viktor beat Tomasz Berkieta 4-6 6-4 6-3
Doubles w/o

U18 qualifying SF

(1)Slovakia 2 GBR 1

Luca beat Michal Krajci 6-4 6-3
Phoenix lost to Peter Benjamin Privara 1-6 3-6
Hugo/Luca lost to Nad/Privara 3-6 2-6

Italy beat Israel and proved far too strong for us today, so we won't be seeded in the under 16 finals, which are in Le Touquet from Monday. The under 18s finished third in their group after wins by Luca and Phoenix earned a 2-0 win over Sweden

U16 qualifying F

(1)Italy 2 GBR 0

Lorenzo Carboni beat Henry 6-0 6-3
Federico Cina beat Viktor 6-3 6-3
