Girls: 2022 European Summer Cups - U12/U14/U16/U18

The season of European Summer Cups starts today with the under 14s.  Nations are divided into 4 qualifying groups of 8 (occasionally with pre-qualifying) with two from each qualifying for the age group finals. In the case of the under 14s the finals are next weekend, and they will provide the European qualifiers for the World Junior Tennis finals in August.

Qualifying for the European finals will not be straightforward for the under 14 team of Arabella Loftus, Mika Stojsavjlevi and Isabelle Britton.  They are in a strong qualifying group, though success at the recent U14 Category 1 grass tournament boosted their rankings sufficiently to be second seeds, and avoid having to face top seeded Romania in a qualification match.  However the third seeds Ukraine are also fairly strong (their number 1 beat Mika easily recently) and to qualify for the European finals we have to beat them.  Day 1 proved straightforward for both teams with GBR beating Greece (Mika won 1 & 2, Arabella 3 & 1) while Ukraine swatted Portugal aside.  We play Ukraine tomorrow

The girls have managed to reach the finals despite a drubbing for Arabella against the strong Ukrainian number 1 (0 & 1). Mika won the second singles 4 & 1 then the two paired up to take the doubles 7-5 6-0. They play Romania tomorrow for seeding rights

Romania won the seeding contest 2-1, Mika winning her singles (Arabella is the higher ranked, so has to play the number 1 singles)

The girls lost 2-1 to Serbia to finish sixth (doubles won by retirement). Unsurprisingly the Czech Republic won the tournament

The second age group to start their qualification process is the under 12s. Unlike the other age groups their qualification involves round robins. Nations are partitioned between 4 qualifying groups, each subdivided into 2 round robins of 4. There follows matches between the top two nations in each round robin against the top two in the other (1v 2, 2 v1).

The team of Megan Knight, Sevil Parviz and Annabel Wong cruised past Georgia 3-0, lost 2-1 to Latvia but recovered today by beating Denmark 3-0. As a result they finished second in their group and must beat the undefeated Serbians tomorrow to reach the finals

Good news from Poland as our under 12s take an unassailable 2-0 lead over Serbia to qualify for their finals. Megan won 4 & 3 while Sevil led 5-1 before her opponent unfortunately retired. Although qualifying takes place before the under 16s and under 18s the finals are after those - in Ajaccio from August 4th.

Under 16 and under 18 qualifying start tomorrow. The under 16 is most significant, as the European finals allows 5 teams to qualify for the Junion Billie Jean King Cup. We are not the only country to have a stronger under 16 team than under 18 in consequence. Isabelle Lacy, Mingge Xu and Ruby Cooling are top seeded in their qualifying group in Greece and have a day 1 bye, as there are only 6 teams there. The under 18 team of Sarah Tatu, Given Roach and Sofia Johnson is in France, but the draw is not yet up

Thats a great 16u team line up and with the incentive of the Junior Billie Jean Cup, no real incentive in the 18s and no  ITF points on offer  so looks like a few of the usual names may have decided to give it a miss.

The 18u girls are 1-1 with Greece, who are missing their top 2 ranked girls. With Sofia Johnson winning in 3 sets but Sara Tatu playing at number 1 losing in 3 sets, all down to the doubles with Given and Sofia playing.
