Weeks 26 and 27 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - women's singles

Lost the first set 1-6

As the commentator says, 'she needs Sat Nav - she's completely lost'

Yes she's getting er...trounced.

Lost first set 6-1 and already broken in set two. Can't figure Tan's style at all.

Katie's getting closer, that's the first time she's taken Tan to deuce on Tan's serve.

As one French twitter says:

"let's be clear - Katie Boulter understands nothing about Tan's game...."

or maybe not Harmony just won her serve to love to make it 5-1.

Took less than an hour mate. 6-1,6-1.

Ok, taking nothing away from Katie's excellent week (up to now) the thing I don't understand is this:

exactly as the French twitter says, she was completely lost - Harmony played 100% her game, there was nothing unexpected there, BUT for Katie it looked as though it was all a shock, she had no idea what was going on or what to do

Did her coach and team not prepare her for it?

As the UK commentator says, Katie had complete 'brain-freeze' - but why would you have brain freeze when you were getting 100% what you knew you'd get, and should have prepared for with her trainer and hitting partners?

Well, first impressions can be misleading! Tan has certainly shifted the goal posts. And I suppose I have to be pleased, because the game is better if it's not all about power.

What a pity though after the emotional time Katie has been through in the last few days with the death of her gran and then that Centre Court win, some let down was not that unexpected.

But that's a big down and yes the apparent unpreparedness for Harmony's game does ask prep / coaching questions.

I suspect it might have gone a little better on a bigger court but a disappointing end to a super run. Yes a shocker she looked so surprised and unprepared for the game style, that did worry me a bit. And it's not as if it's not a style you can't practice for meeting.

Oh well, onwards!

My feeling is that Katie is probably emotionally spent , losing her gran, amazing high of reaching round 4, her boyfriend doing well and probably stress around that for her as well - her brain tank was effectively empty and the different style of Tan just blew her apart.

Shes done well these few weeks, needs to take her game
Into the hardcourt season now and leave this match behind her.

Did not expect that scoreline. It was almost as if Tan played in slow motion at times.
No pounding the ball everywhere. But cleverly weaving it like a web.
I agree though with others on here. Katie should have been maybe better prepared for this match.
Harmony played her style so why did Katie not try something else. Have a plan B.
No good saying brain freeze. It's exactly the same for both players out there.
I'm gutted for Katie as really thought the score would be closer than that.
Still think she needs a better coach to take her that next step because she has the game if she stays fit and healthy.
Well done to Tan. Be interested to see what happens if she meets Gauff in the next round.

Strangely I thought Katie would  beat Tan and Heather would lose to Juvan.

I suspect you're close there. Shades of Emma last year, lots going on and eventually hit the wall but still a great few weeks. The real work was the weeks before Wimbledon when Katie, Heather and Jodie potentially moved themselves into a seeded position for US qualifying.
