Weeks 26 and 27 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - women's singles

An unusually brief Wang service game. Here we go...

*5-3

Wang now trying to stop play before Heather serves. Very cheeky. But it is incredibly dark.

4 missed first serves. Broken to 15. A sleepless night awaits I'm afraid.

5-4*

Rather fancy Wang on the resumption I'm afraid to come out and finish this set off. Heather really sat back in those two games and let Wang get the strikes flowing, very frustrating.

It will be very interesting.

I suspect that it will be tougher for Wang to come out to have to immediately hold serve to stay in it than it was to give everything to that last game tonight.

I think Heather has to break on the resumption, I think if it gets to *5-5 I just can't see her not getting flustered and pushing the ball.

I agree about the lack of depth, as Peter said

To me, I don't understand why she's hitting all her forehands with such topspin and not flattening them out as she used to

If her coach has told her to, he/she's an idiot

As it looks very deliberate

And all this kneeling right down to absorb the pace, even on shots that aren't actually that pacey, is ridiculous - it leaves her very exposed for the next shot as she basically has to get up and then do her 'positioning' jump, before pushing off, and there's no way she's got the time, so she's late

It could obviously be injury related (as in not much practice time) but it doesn't look like directly injury-related for the shots (i.e. there's no reason your movement would be off AND your forehand would be off from the same injury)

It looks to me more coach related - someone's told her to go for more margin over the net (presumably because she was missing some)

It's ruined her return of serve (on the forehand side)

Anyway, who knows....... certainly, if she's still recovering, then let's hope she gets some solid practice time

And gets rid of Jane Donoghue (never rated her) and finds someone who can look at the positives of her game and work on those

So very many valid points and questions here CD.

it does seem that Emma has regressed in the past 12 months. Gone is the athletic bouncy player playing fast attacking tennis and replaced by a largely passive one that seems to have lost a lot of confidence and frankly direction.

I really couldn't say looking at her this year that a single part of her game has improved. More importantly, right now, I don't see a single part of her game that would frighten any decent level pro. Her return of serves was fantastic in the US Open but I've not seen any conviction in it of late.

Today was not only a disappointing result but frankly a disappointing performance. Garcia, of course is a decent player, but she utterly outclassed Emma today from start to finish.

At least it looks like Heather will win and I've a good feeling about the way Katie B is playing right now.

Neither did I say that someone had, suggested that. Don't you think the likes of Tan, or Maserova today (who could hardly keep the ball in court), or Korpatsch would have provided an easier challenge?

Apparently Korpatsch was very angry when Tan pulled out of their doubles after her Serena victory. Lashed out on social media. Called her unprofessional- although other ex players have had a go back at Korpatsch for airing it in public

Like the men, Katie B and Harriet have two high profile matches today on centre and court 2 respectively, against highly seeded opponents. A win by either would be amazing. Heather seems the more likely one though to see it over the line out on court 18.

Hope one can prove me wrong but we could see Heather and Cam in the mens as our only players left after today.

TA - I think youre going today, enjoy Katie , Nadal and Gauff on centre

And Emmsie - enjoy Harriet as well as Halep and Kyrgios on court 2!

Cheers, Starting on Court 12 I think and giving Nick a swerve although it might be entertaining if people heckle him

Court 12 has a great line up today, possibly the best outside centre

Thanks JonH. Lookng forward to seeing Katie and my wife is an ardent Rafa fan ! Saw Coco in her debut year so will be interesting as well to see how she has progressed.
If the traffic isn't too bad and we get there early enough we'll drop in on an outside court as well. I see Joe is on Court 8 at 11am but we haven't made any plans yet.

I was wondering why they put uncompleted matches on second, surely the players would want to just get out there and get it over and done with so that the winner can rest up for their next match.

Because they have to cool down, eat etc after their match so potentially won't get to bed till gone 11 then have to prepare in the morning
