Some relatively good grass players there, but not a section that stood out to me as some 'mountain to climb'. To me, it was and remains a perfectly OK section.
Emma is where Emma is at the moment so not able to take advantage. And it wasn't so bad for the WCs Lily and Katie.who played pretty well and found themselves not that far away.
This x 100. No point turning up to any Slams if youre going to cower trembling under your bed over the likes of Caroline Garcia and Marta Kostyuk.
It didn't appear to me that our players were overawed by their opponents, both Miyazaki and Swan showed that their WC's were well deserved. Their matches were considerably more difficult to negotiate, than other matches I've seen this last couple of days, do you not agree? Garcia, dispatched Andreescu in a tight match to win in Germany. Swan had the bottle to play in that competition, and gave Andreescu a good run for her money, after beating Stevens in the previous round.
We'll see how either Zhang and Garcia does as the tournament progresses, I believe they are due to meet in the next round.

No-one suggested that our players were overawed. The point being made was that they weren't draws that should overawe. As I said they played pretty well and weren't that far away which was good to see so-one is getting at them at all.
But I don't agree that their matches were in general considerably more difficult to negotiate than others.
Heather does well to save 3 break points but poor second serves cost her on game points. Saves a fourth with a good serve. Fun net exchange gives us game point 3.
6-5*
God Inverdale drones on inanely, poor Sam doing wonders to ignore him or smack him over the head.
Neither did I say that someone had, suggested that. Don't you think the likes of Tan, or Maserova today (who could hardly keep the ball in court), or Korpatsch would have provided an easier challenge?

Not saying there weren't sone easier draws out there. Am saying that overall it is a perfectly OK section of the draw and not for me as difficult as you imply.
Huge return angle gives Heather set point. Wang rushes the net and gets the job done. She gets a second, but blows a second serve return puffing the forehand miles long, awful miss. Saves a game point and gets a third courtesy of big double fault.
Long rally, Heather just clips the baseline and Wang goes wide.

I'd totally forgotten just how highly ranked Wang was, her ball strike is huge but inconsistent. Sam made the point about her previous coach (Paul McNamee) passing away just as she was peaking, and she's never really recovered.
Heather unfortunate to slip on her first break point, but when she got a second after a few deuces she blew the backhand return miles wide. A third is saved with a good serve, and after another deuce or two a great passing shot brings her a fourth, and Wang nets off a slice.
*2-0
Yes CD, so far she is actually hitting her forehand, rather than just pushing or steering it.

And all I was saying is the luck of the draw is a big thing, especially for the younger players, and they (the younger Brits) might have had an easier draw. Perhaps I shouldn't have have used the phrase "a mountain to climb", because it seems you all have reacted to that, .... though it seems to me for the players to get through against an evenly-matched opponent where there a very few easy points, it must feel like a tough task, round after round.
Heather saves a break point but the good thing is she's actually winning points, hitting her serve, moving the ball about with purpose. I hope it continues!
