The first of the ITF junior grasscourt events is listed as a Grade 1 but it remains to be seen whether it will receive Grade 1 points, lower grade or none at all following the ITF announcement last month that "ITF ranking points will only be retained in UK-based LTA tournaments in ITF World Tennis Tour, Juniors, Wheelchair and Seniors international tours if satisfactory alternative equivalent opportunities exist in other countries." Grade 2 is the highest alternative.
Qualifying starts tomorrow for 6 places in the main draw. In the boys' event 5 of the top 6 qualifying seeds are British: Fabio Nestola, Freddie Ridout, Henry Jefferson, Roy Keegan and Kyle Hughes. Serena Manca, Marelie Raath, Hannah Smith and Paulina Jurkowska are among the top six girls qualifying seeds.
In the boys Fabio and Roy were the only ones of our top 5 to qualify, but they have been joined by Luke Hopper and Kyran Magimay In the main draw (already out via the link above) they join Will Jansen, Matt Rankin, Louis Bowden, Phoenix Weir, Patrick Brady, along with wildcards Ben Gusic Wan, Zach Stephens, Henry Searle, Oliver Bonding, Viktor Frydrych and Hugo Coquelin
In the girls Hannah Smith, Georgiana Mititelu and Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kijako qualified to join Hannah Klugman, Hephzibah Oluwadare, Daniela Piani, Sarah Tatu, Given Roach, Ruby Cooling and wildcards Jaquelyn Ogunwale, Millie Skelton, Sofia Johnson, Erin Pierce, Mia Wainwright and Maria Ustic in the main draw (most of our top ranked girls have of course withdrawn to play Wimbledon qualifying)
That was the question I posed but i don't have an answer. The strength of the Roehampton field suggests there are good points available, but we will probably have to wait until next Monday's rankings to find out unless there is anyone on the board with inside info.
Here we have 48 draws so the seeds (none British) only come in round 2. Not much British success in round 1 in the boys, with Patrick Brady and Henry Searle still to play.
