Wimbledon Wildcards

Thats right Jon. I guess they want to stage the event but if the public come along its a bit of a nuisance :(

Why can't it be? They're never going to get huge crowds, why does it have to be the LTA's sport and not the publics?

It should be I agree - I guess if they make it open they need to put in place services such as catering, toilets, security, disability access etc even if at a small scale? But that presumably could be done and making the sport more open should be an aim, I would say

As well as the above I suspect it is because they are using the practice courts where there is little space for spectators. I would imagine they would count the spectators in tens rather than in greator numbers as the general public wouldn't even know the play-offs existed.

From the wild card play offs fact sheet, the WC play offs, wild cards (too many wild cards here!) will be from:

Mens Wild Cards. 1 wild card from winning the LTA British Tour Premier Felixstowe JOSH PARIS (won this event)
1 wild card from winning the Progress Tour Cromer event - APPARENTLY TAKING PLACE RIGHT NOW BUT WEBSITE GIVE NO DETAILS ON RESULTS ETC - ANYONE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON??!!
1 wild card for the top GB player on the ITF junior ranking list at 13 June having signed in WILL JANSEN (CURRENTLY TOP JUNIOR)
Top ranked NCAA player having signed in (subject to the player being in the NCAA top 100) - CURRENTLY ARTHUR FERY IS TOP RANKED IN NCAA (and is here playing in the UK)

Well done, TA !!! Dead impressive

And pleased with those names - would like Millen and Toby to go through to the final

And, allez, Alice - a nice game on grass

Can non-Brits play in the Wimbly play-offs? I seem to remember 'no'. Would Alice get it even if she lost?

It's only a wild card for the men's winner (see the LTA fact sheet).

The website is hard to navigate so best to look at twitter for the results.

From the fact sheet:

ELIGIBILITY  This event is open only to British players (as determined by the ITF).

I think Toby Samuel lost the Felixstowe final to Josh Paris to miss that route to a wildcard so would be good if he can do something in this one!

Toby won the final, so gets the WC and a cheque for £2,000. Joanna wins the ladies, but has to settle for just the cheque.

Congrats to Toby - and that's a nice quali wildcard play-off place for him

(Just possible that Millen gets one on ranking anyway)

Van Rijthoven is in the singles final in atp 250 in s-Hertogenbosch; he lost in qualies last week in Surbiton! And plays Ilkley next week. If he wins the title tomorrow, youd have to say hes putting himself into the wild card discussion.

Given that the first two challengers havent produced a winner not already in the main draw, the dutchman and Virtanen are two putting themselves in the discussion.

Although Virtanen wasnt given a qualies wildcard at Ilkley so that is probably to Think he might get a Wimbledon one.
