Yes. Love the idea that they were just hanging around and thought - ok, there's a slot, why not? Or someone in the admin office saw there was the withdrawal and gave Notts tennis coach a call and said, do you have anyone who fancies a game?

Maia is beaten by the 4th seed by 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Shame but there do look to be encouraging signs.

Ah poor Maia - but fantastic to see her back competing really well and seemingly healthy.

Over in the doubles, some good net play from both Sonay and Freya going on

Oh, gutted for Maia, didn't get the chance to watch any of the match, but wanted her to win so much

I couldn't watch Maia, after the victory thrown away last week, as 5-2 up or something like that. I saw she was leading in the third set 3-1 (I think) and just thought - oh no.....

But, yes, there are more important things and getting through a tough three-set match, and running it close, is an achievement in itself.

I do wonder if Naiktha may have some feelings about calling it a day in the not too distant future. If she were to sift to a regular 400-500 player, while that's still great in the general scheme of things, to be among the best 500 women in the whole world in a given field, and some of our 700/800+ players would love to in and around those positions, for someone who had a bit of hype early on (like that BBC video when 7), someone who has (just) been inside the top 200, someone who has had a lot of WCs (presumably switching nationality to get a top up) and a fair bit experience of playing in bigger events, I'm not sure I see her sticking around if that ends up being her natural level, which is looking the case when you see her record over the past 2 and a half years or so, and that she's lost 66% of her matches this year, only winning 4, and none of these recent defeats seem a surprise.
