Week 17 - WTA1000 - Madrid, Spain - Clay

Good stuff. The Emma works it out, wins a first set tiebreak, and runs away with the second set script has been seen a few times before.

So the next test is to see if Emma can counter the drubbing she received from Kostyuk last year.

 Yes, I expect she will.

So now she has to get the hang of winning two or more in a row without retiring. One step at a time.

Is Will Herbert with her this time? I didn't see him in the box but there were not many pan ins.

I didn't see the match but the reports are that Iain Bates is coaching her this week, I believe.

Yes, I saw Bates but  often Will is there also, as physio.

The Telegraph says only Iain Bates and Chris Hellier are with her in Madrid.

I confess that until Emma's next match tomorrow, Julia Putintseva v Cori Gauff is the popcorn match for me this evening.

There's also the clash between the two pre tournament favourites, even after the draw. Badosa vs Halep, highest seed vs two time Madrid champ. Can't believe that's a R2 match. disbelief

A bit of trivia . Although Emma has not yet  played many matches on the  main WTA tour she has already  played  5 out of  the top 6 of the currently highest ranked players yet  to win a WTA tournament. . i.e Tomljanovic, Rogers, Martincova, Sasnovich and Kostyuk.  Kostyuk is currently  the highest ranked player not to have played in a WTA singles  final.

Yup. It is possible, now she has to do it frequently - or often, even.
