Boys & Girls: J2 Aldershot, Outdoor hard (Week 17)

Great to get all these J2 wins.

Though as a J2 is it relatively weaker than many / most ?

Yes, absolutely - for both biggrin

Also helped by the fact there's a big JA in Germany this week and another J2 in Italy.

And both are on clay - so youngsters targeting the French Open have gone there smile

Not much in the UK now until the grass. There is a G5 at Wrexham and G4 at Edinburgh before the 2 x G1 at Nottingham and Roehampton

It is good that this G2 is on the weaker side, gives our players the chance of a big ranking jump and direct entry on the grass rather 5han relying on a wildcard

That said, certainly for Wimbledon, the fields are 64 arent they - not sure how deep they go down in terms of entry level, but I dont think many of our juniors are going to be pushing quite high enough to get in to the main draw directly, other than Ranah perhaps? Or do the entry's at Wimbledon go quite a long way down?

I see Matt Rankin is in the doubles semis, but didnt play singles (at least, I cant find him in the draw!).

Seems a strange decision, or is he returning from injury or illness perhaps?

Matt retired from his match in week 1 of the Dominican Republic trip and has entered and withdrawn from 2 or 3 tournaments since then (including the Nationals) so just playing doubles makes sense

While we are building up our numbers to move into contention for Grand Slam places later in the year it will be too late for Wimbledon (though there are of course wildcards).  The Roland Garros entry lists are out with just Ranah in the main draw, and Ella just outside qualifying (should make it), and it will be fairly similar probably for Wimbledon, given the top grade events for the next month or so are on clay, with sparse British entry.  The qualifying cut is likely to be inside 100 for Wimbledon qualifying, with anyone who moves into the top 100 probably being offered a main draw wildcard anyway.

What a great tournament ! Well done all, wish could livestream Mimi vs Hephzibah - thats a match Id love to see.

Given Mimi beat Hannah twice who beat Hep twice recently it ought to be straightforward for the former.

I'm surprised too. But luckily that can so often happen in tennis.

PS: I meant surprises so often happen in tennis. Re me being surprised in tennis, I'm constantly surprised in life generally. I don't know what's going on ...

Thrilled for her. I'm a huge fan of Mimi, too, but she's already had her golden moment this month - nice to share with the others

Great win for Hephzibah, pleased for her too. I think it shows there is a great crop of junior girls coming through who seems to be pushing one another along, the resujts show that Group of girls can beat one another so its never a given who Will come out on top on the  actual day. Id say things are looking brighter than theyve been for a while. Hoping to see similar in the boys. A different result to the nationals again on the cards.
