Week 37 - Davis Cup Finals 2022 (group stage partly in Glasgow 14-18th September)

Apart from the obvious mobility Issues AM has, there Isn't the chemistry there either in the hours they've had this week, just not seen it at all.

Actually we were there watching. Andy served far better than Jo and also returned far better. He certainly wasnt slow! So Im sure it was a very hard decision for Leon but Andy didnt let him down. Leon just had too many great players to choose from.

I would say it is unlikely but you never know :P.

Anyway, if we don't then we play one of the following plus 4 QF losers from Malaga in November:-

Argentina

Korea Republic

France

Belgium

Kazakhstan

Croatia/Sweden

Spain/Serbia/Canada (likely to be Canada)

Austria

Colombia/Turkey

Czech Republic

Japan/Uzbekistan

Ecuador/Switzerland

 Peru/Chile

Portugal

Norway

Hungary

Slovakia/Romania

Finland

Bosnia Herzegovina

From Austria down is the teams competing in the world group 1 play offs so it would be the winners of these ties and it's also worth noting that I am not sure who would be home/away if we drew all these, I am sure home/away is used for the qualifiers so it would be good to get a home tie.

Hi - well it seems like a great occasion. But on TV , for the last set, Andy seemed the weak link. Fine margins.

either way , a team that should have got to the finals, went out . So questions need to be asked and Leon needs to look at himself, I believe .

Does this round get seeded or is it a free for all?

I'd imagine there will be seeding so we could be seeded which would also be a help.

Anyway, a quick correction to my original post, it is indeed likely to be Serbia as Canada beat Spain 2-1 to top the group and Spain likely to qualify as they have Korea next, Serbia needing to win 3-0 which won't be easy against Auger-Aliassime and Pospisil

No Andy wasnt the week link, actually Cam didnt play at all well today and should have beaten Botik. So I agree we shouldnt have gone out but it wasnt because Andy played!!

I really hope Leon gets grilled about his selection because that I'd the reason for this elimination, why the hell call up Neal yet not play him.

Jack Draper would have been in too had he not got injured in US Open so let's hope he's available for either February or next September.

I would stick with Leon btw but I can see it being hard for the LTA to stick with him after this, especially in terms of the fact this was supposedly "our best team yet".

The question is, if he does step down or get sacked then, who next because I can't see Tim or Greg taking the role and I doubt Jamie Delgado will either?

Would Jeremy Bates be available again ?

I was thinking again overnight on this. It is a big disappointment and , much as I love him as a player and person, still think Andy playing was a poor selection. But Cam really underperformed and I also think Leon takes some rap for that. As a court side captain he needs to be able to motivate, advise, encourage his players and , to me, sometimes seemed like just the water carrier.

I like Leon and dont know whether sacking him makes much difference
Or not - last night in the heat of the moment I was all for Leon out. Leon probably needs to make the call himself.

What would have happened if wed been host for the final 8 - playing the finals without your host team would have looked bad .

I'd certainly be more concerned about the doubles selection, particularly for the second match having seen the first.

Motivation required yes but ultimately Cam's singles performance must be much more about Cam than Leon on the day.

Disappointing ? Yes. And defeats will always lead to questions over selection. But as Leon points out, he picked the top 2 ranked singles players, the Nº 1 ranked doubles player plus Andy Murray. The last selection might be considered by some to be an error, in hindsight, but hardly controversial. Had he picked Neal Skupski and the Joe/Neal combination didn't click (not sure they've ever played before) and had they been beaten, I have no doubt that many people would have been saying 'he should have picked Andy in the doubles'.

Team Captains are the only ones that ever have their selections put to the test. Everyone else can speculate over how their selections would have fared but in the end, we will never know whether those selections would have done any better.

As for replacing Leon, I would be shocked if that happened - unless he stood down of his own choice. As far as I am concerned, he has far too much credit in the bank to be dumped after one disappointing result.

Leon defending the selection :

bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/62936762

Yes, I don't think it's at all controversial to pick our top two ranked players for singles and the #1 ranked player in the world for doubles. Not controversial or difficult. As for the pick that was more of a decision to be made, seemingly between the #3 ranked player in the world or Andy ...

"Is it controversial to put Andy Murray out there on the court here in Glasgow? I don't think so. We believed that was the right thing to do and it rests on me". Indeed Leon, particularly that selection rests on you, even if there was a "we".

And yes it is controversial if there is not more substance to it than being Andy Murray and in Glasgow. There has to be more to it surely? So was he judging that being in Glasgow would inspire Andy to be a more likely winning partner wirh Joe than Neal would have been? Quite a call. Spell it our a bit more please, Leon.

Perhaps a bit better to be seen to be a bad judge than thought of as"spineless" as has been said on here.
