Yes, the Belorussian started so well - and then, like often in juniors, got all rattled when Hannah hung in and then played a few decent shots, and rather went to pieces. Whereas Hannah didn't get rattled at by being hit off the court in the first three games.
I came back just to hear them commentators talking about them being 1.82 - which I assume must mean Hannah, as they'd already said the other was 1.85.
And that she'd grown hugely since September (which would tie in with Hannah as she has really shot up)
Mind you, the commentators are pretty dense, bless them, they're famous in France for it - they've just spent 10 mins talking about Belorussian and Ukraine and what the difference was and where they are on the map and admitting they'd got no idea
Hannah's comfortable passage to the final (first Brit since Laura Robson and Liam Broady in 2008) contrasts with her opponent Julia Stusek. The third seeded German came from a set down in her quarter-final and semi-final, today ousting the top seed. She has played a fair number of ITF junior events, winning the last (Grade 5) without having a closer set than 6-3, which gives her an ITF Junior ranking of 442.
There is an all-British final in the Wheelchair Boys Singles between Ben Bartram and Dahnon Ward
1) is this event the top u14 event in the world, or at least in Europe? Its a big deal, yes?
2) I see Hannah got in as a WC - is that because she is just out of u12's and hasnt got a ranking at u14 level? or is she performing above her ranking level this week? Or maybe she is good and known to be good but just hasnt bothered accumulating points in u14 play? Or maybe the seedings really mean nothing at all at this level of the game?
Keen to try and understand how big a deal this is really, I am guessing quite a big deal?!
Its a big deal for Hannah. She places winning this event alongside her ambitions for playing Wimbledon and being a grand slam champion. In December 2020 she spoke about her ambitions in tennis and other than mentioning her timelines for when she wanted to play Wimbledon and be a grand slam champion, she said "In one year I really want to win this really big under 14 Tennis Europe called Tarbes."
Jon, Les Petits As is the world's top, joint-top or second-to-top event for U14s, along with the US Junior Orange Bowl.
It calls itself the World Championships for U14
It's bigger even that a Grand Slam (because there are four Grand Slams but only 2 truly top U14 events)
It's been won by Rafa, Gasquet, Ferroro, Tiafoe etc.
But if you look at past winners, it's even more impressive a predictor on the girls' side (because - presumably - 14 year-old boys change more than girls as puberty is a little later)
So you've had Ostapenko, Cici Bellis, Hingis, Andreescu, Clijsters, Kournikova etc etc
THe really impressive thing for Hannah is that nearly all the winners are in their U14 year - it's extremely hard to win if you're not the right year as you're playing the absolute top
Last September, Hannah made the semis despite being two years young. Unheard of. (Although presumably slightly helped by the fact the event was delayed from Jan to Sept coz of covid)
This year she's made the final (and counting) despite being a year young.

Thanks CD and also Lambda- really informative. Its a part of the game that passes me by, only being around this board has opened my eyes a little !
I recall Hannah reaching the semis last year and tying with Cam in our PoM vote for February I believe it was - maybe it was held a week later last year? Anyway, Ill be looking out for her in the PoM nominations later today !
