Week 47/48 - Davis Cup Finals - Madrid (Spain), Innsbruck (Austria), and Turin (Italy) (indoor hard)

Germany chose Koepfer and, as expected, Rublev thrashed him. Looks like it will be Russia v Croatia now. Should have listened to me.

Russia won 2-1 , lost the dead doubles match.

So Russia v Croatia in the final

One silver lining in losing in the last 8 is that we dont qualify automatically for next years finals and have to through qualies. If they keep the 18 team draw which includes the 4 semifinalists and 2 wildcards, there will be 12 places through qualies. I believe that is 12 straight home or away matches so GB will play a one off match and it could be at home. I think Im correct that those matches are still 5 rubbers but over 2 days, with 2 singles day one and 2 reverse singles and a doubles day 2, best of 3 sets these days.

I read somewhere that the draw for that is early next week? Not sure when matches are played Next year, it was early March this year, so it would be indoors if we are at home.

But now gb has wildcard into next year's finals, so won't play in March.

Just about to say the same, must have looked at bbc sport soon after it went on there. Understandable given our singles and doubles rankings at moment.

Plus if it is in Abu Dhabi we bring a lot of local fans , ex pats , or people willing to travel money talks

Davis Cup should not have WCs, other than by specified performance criteria and possibly the hosts of a finals tournament.

Oh yes, totallly agree. But if they are giving them, I guess we will take one for us ?

I like the edit - yes, I think for hosts it's fine (although the UAE, for instance, may well refuse one if they think they'll look an idiot).

I don't see any other justification for one.

So nothing is yet certain regarding the Davis Cup Finals 2022

Stu Fraser posted on the 2nd Dec:

Monday 29th Nov: "ITF & Kosmos are pleased to invite you to the official announcement of the next host city of the Davis Cup Finals [on Sunday]"
Thursday 2nd Dec: Interesting development on the Davis Cup front. The scheduled announcement of the new host on Sunday (expected to be Abu Dhabi) has suddenly been cancelled. Told that a virtual announcement of the new Davis Cup host is now going ahead on Sunday afternoon. Organisers say that the original in-person media event was cancelled for Covid reasons.
Sunday 5th Dec: Organisers say they have a "preferred option" but won't give details on location as negotiations are... erm... ongoing

Enrico Maria Riva added today at 14.00: Davis Cup Finals 2022: 4 cities to host Group Stage. Locations still TBC. Bidding process to start in January. Announcement expected in March. Neutral venue for Knockout Stage. Still TBC. There is a preferred option that we are negotiating, announcement in next few weeks

And the BBC website (Russell Fuller) article ends with  "The LTA is understood to be keen to host one of November's group stages in the UK. The bidding process will formally be launched on 15 December."

Perhaps our Wildcard is a consolation prize for not getting one of the host cities ...

I suspect theyd have an agreement that UAE wont get a wildcard as hosts for that specific reason. Be thankful youve got it , chaps, but dont expect to play in it!

it seems it isnt all going to be in uae as well - theyve got the groups in 4 separate European cities to be named, indoor hardcourt , and the quarters onwards are in Abu Dhabi.

the event is also a 16 country event which means it is Russia, croatia, Serbia and Britain plus the 12 qualifiers that will come through - a little bit of jigging needed in the qualies as there are 14 countries who played in finals this time who wont qualify , and that means 10 teams only from the level below. This time they had the 4 semifinalists and 2 wildcards getting through automatically, theyve only got the finalists plus 2 this time (Serbia where of course semifinalists themselves so its Germany that have lost out to Britain - given they beat us, they may feel hard done by!).

Seems that as well as our wild card , one of then4 group venues could head to Britain - Glasgow is favourite it seems

The format has changed for this year : 4 groups will be played in 4 separate cities between 14 and 18 September.

The top 2 in each group will go through to the 8 team finals in November.

The respective venues are going through bidding processes; Qatar or UAE isnt certain at all it appears - and as they have the World Cup football starting in late November, in that region, I doubt theyd go down there and compete for attention.

The first group stages in September are the week before the Laver Cup in London , at the O2. Id have thought the LTA must bid and try and get one of the groups - Britain is already qualified, two weeks back to back would work a treat, and players already here for the Laver Cup, which some would be, would presumably like two weeks in the same country.

Venues will be decided in March.
