No, I meant a backhand down the line from the deuce court, e. g. the the same line he would hit a forehand down the line. That's surely classed as down the line?

Kazakhstan taken a lead over Serbia in first rubber today - one set up in opening match. Real chance they can win this, their number 2 (Kukushkin) can beat Kecmanovic, and the doubles is winnable and they have options on who they could pick. Decent squad.

Kukushkin did win, 13-11 in a final set tie break, before Djoko made it 1-1. Djokovic playing with cacic now against Golubev and Nevodseyedov (sic)

And the doubles is into a final set. Not sure what the crowd in Madrid is like with no Spanish team to cheer but the event is certainly delivering some tight and tense matches.

Serbia took the final set and tie and are into the semis.

Draw is now

Russia or Sweden v Germany

Croatia v Serbia

Thoroughly expected Russia to beat Sweden without losing a set - I mean, come on, Rublev v Elias Ymer, and Medvedev v Mikail Ymer...

And Rublev won the first set 6-2. But Elias has come back and taken the second set, 7-5 and they are in a final set. And is now 2-1 up albeit on serve.

Tennis is a crazy sport

Rublev wasn't great in the group stage.

Though I see that he has scraped through 7-6(3) in the third.

True but he is putting points on the board, hes contributed 4 wins in total so far, only equalled by Djokovic .

Hard to see Russia losing and a Russia v Serbia , Medvedev v Djokovic final looms. Which would be a decent end to the world season

Croatia win the opening match against Serbia , Gojo again! Djoko should square it, but then Mektic and Pavic play doubles !

Djoko wins as expected in 2 sets.

So semifinal will be down to doubles - Mektic and Pavic versus Djokovic and Krajinovic (a late substitute). This will be very interesting

Mektic and Pavic prove a top doubles pair can beat the top singles player and another top ranked player at doubles - which restores my faith ! 2 sets to love.

Croatia into the final and play Russia or Germany

7-5 6-1 at this level is pretty convincing.

It certainly is, they played very well apparently.

it is hard to see Germany beating Russia. They could win the doubles but Struff wont beat Medvedev. But looking at head to heads, Gojowczyk has a 3-2 lead over Rublev including last time out. I wonder if Germany will chance it and put him out against Rublev? It didnt go too well when he played Dan but, different day etc.

croatia v Germany as a final would be very interesting if unexpected... assuming it is Croatia v Russia, that second singles could again be the key , as Medvedev should beat Cilic and Id expect Mektic and Pavic to beat the Russian pair in doubles, albeit close. rublev v Gojo would still be v much in the Russians favour though.

so Gojowzyk to play, beat Rublev, see Germany into the final and get Croatia to win the title .

wont happen but will be interesting .

ive actually enjoyed this Davis Cup in this format, I did last time, needs to have Some changes but its working fine for me.

ps ITF have cancelled the announcement of Abu Dhabi as hosts next time . Could it be pulled?
