RE: US College Signings 2022/23

The Ivies and D3 dont offer athletic scholarships;

The Ivies do not offer sports scholarships but because of the quality of the education recruitment to the Ivies is as intense for student athletes as in other D1 colleges. Most of the UK players who have declared for Ivies for the Class of 26 (Fall 22) turned down D1 Scholarship offers elsewher.

 Undoubtedly.

Allegedly recruitment can be challenging for the Ivies because they dont offer athletic scholarships and this can make it hard to recruit against the D1s who do. Also the academic requirement is another recruiting challenge for the coaches.

Some of the Ivies offer financial aid up to a certain level of family income (used to be ~$160k). Location also a consideration, with many whose parents can afford the fees preferring to avoid the cold winters and choosing a Uni on the West Coast.

In terms of the diversity, I am only aware of Paul Midgely who went from UK state school to Ivy League to play tennis. Paul competed against more than 1,200 applicants for 150 scholarships from the Sutton Trust- a program aimed at increasing the number of state school UK students from non privileged backgrounds going to Uni in the US.

Many of the D3 unis also have excellent academics, but I can only remember seeing one player on the signings chat list  ( cant remember his name) going to D3.

Just a question - what are the rules now for financial winnings allowed for us college players? I remember they changed it reasonably recently - and made it a general 10k allowance or something like that?

Just wondering about Toby Samuel and his £3k that he's just won in the British Tour Masters.....

Yes last time I checked, once the $10,000 is reached, NCAA rules state the player can still get additional money if it doesn't exceed his or her necessary expenses for participating in the event. The  £3k is still below $10k when converted , but he did win some BT and Progress Tour events over the summer too - so not sure what his cumulative winnings will be for the year. I wouldn't have though that his winnings less expenses would have exceeded $10k though - so most likely should be OK

Dont know if this is open to internationals??

Cracked Racquets, LLC, announced the launch of Project Elite, a program dedicated to providing NIL ( name, image, likeness) opportunities for collegiate tennis athletes across the country through the promotion of college tennis.

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Cracked Racquets athletes will appear on multiple Cracked Racquets media outlets (podcasts, social media channels, ect.) to discuss and promote the season. They will also be able to both design and sell their own individual lines of merchandise, and provide behind the scenes access to the life of a student-athlete.

For inquiries or further details on how to either support or become a part of Project Elite, contact Cracked Racquets CEO Dalton Thieneman. He can be reached by calling 502-396-647or emailing dalton@crackedracquets.com

It's not signings but just 2022 US college chat.....

Just to note that former college players, Emma Wilson and Lauryn J-B, (in the women), both got their first wins in a 25k today.

Emma's only ever played one ITF before. (Lost 2 & 0 against Eden Richardson)

And Lauryn hadn't played for about 3 years either until a couple of months ago.

And plenty of US college names in the men too - Charlie Broom & Dan Little both got wins today

That's brilliant. The more domestic ITFs (15k/25k) available, the more opportunities for the domestic players and the college grads /students to get some ranking points

TCU topples no 1 Florida in season opener

Great start to the season for TCUs Jake Fearnley who showed his mettle at # 6 singles. The Scotland native began his match after Aguilar put TCU in front, 3-0, and managed to handle the pressure to the tune of a 7-6, 6-4 match clinching victory over Florida fellow Brit Josh Goodger (ranked 111).

Freshman Lui Maxted lost at #3 singles, but won the doubles playing #2. Jake won at #1 doubles

College players/recent college grads are well represented at this weeks ITF M25 in Bath.

MD: Arthur Fery (Stanford), Ali G (g TCU), Ewan Moore (g Tulane), Toby Samuel (S Carolina), Dan Little (Utah),  Charlie Broom (g Dartmouth, Baylor) and Giles Hussey (g Utah). Also Mike Shaw (Loughborough) and I think Mark Whitehouse (g Imperial)

Charlie Broom plays Dan Cox in the final at 11am today (livestream https://live.itftennis.com/en/live-streams/ )

I havent worked out the average age of the players, but must be mid-20s and a smart bunch judging from all those college degrees biggrin  Also a few years older than those dont go the college route and who try the circuit  at 18/19. The youngest player was 15 year old Phoenix Weir - a player who seems to have won the right junior tournaments but not an LTA fave hmm

Not many Internationals at DIII as they dont offer athletic scholarships, but do offer academic for those that are super smart. The cost  of attendance for DIII can be high. Brandeis is ~$76k per annum.

Not a player I am familiar with, but congratulations to Tommy!

From the Tennis Smart FB page
