2022 BJK Cup Qualifiers - Czech Republic vs GB - 15-16 April - plus pre Finals preamble

Draw takes place 1pm UK today.

We are unseeded and will meet one of the following teams.

Australia

France

USA

Czech Republic

Belarus

Spain

Germany

Romania

Canada

Romania would be at home. I think the other teams will be by lot.

Czech Republic away. Tough although pretty much all the potential draws we could have had were. A few we might have been able to sneak at home if Jo's form improves...

Might be worth a trip though.

Are we sure Jo still wants to play?

If it's held on clay it might be worth bringing Fran into the squad.

Apart from 2019 and the match v. Mexico that was transferred to London in 2021 why are  we  forever condemned to away ties?. Sweden, Argentina,Rumania,Japan,Slovakia and Mexico before it was transferred were all away ties. Only Kazakstan at home for what was. a meaningless tie in the end. Does anybody actally think Jo will  appear in the BJK Cup again or will it be down to Emma to perform miracles?

We were always going to get an away tie as the teams who played in Prague were going to get a home tie unless they had played their opponents at home in their most recent tie. I don't think we will ever get to Prague . More potential  for playing qualifying at Bath again. The top 2 teams ( Russia and Switzerland) -are qualified for next year, the next 9 have home advantage and the poorest team in Prague , Slovakia has an away tie. I wonder when some years ago Judy Murray was complaining about the format of the Fed Cup she had this in mind. As an event it is going to pass us by.

Emma's never actually played for GB yet AFAIK, she was in the squad against Slovakia but her doubles dead rubber was cancelled.

That isn't how it works. If teams haven't played each other before then who plays at home is chosen by draw. Unfortunately for us, the draw went in favour of the Czechs. The home nation for all the ties were chosen by draw except for the Australia, France and USA ties.

Chances are we were going to get an away tie because in most cases in recent years we haven't got out of regional qualifying from Budapest or Estonia, Apart from 2019  we had away   ties  against Sweden, Argentina, Rumania  and Japan .All the top countries we would play away because we were not good enough to get out of regional qualifying after 1993 until 2019 and then they chsnged the competition when we did.Basically we have not played any of the top countries since 1993 ex. Rumania and any of the seeded countries would. have a home tie against us..

but as lambda said, it doesnt work that way. The higher ranked teams dont have an inbuilt advantage in the draw. If youve never played a head to heard tie with a nation before and get drawn against them, you then have a draw for home advantage which is a pure toss of the coin situation. so Gb where fifty fifty versus most nations specifically because theyd played regional qualifiers all that time.

however , it doesnt matter as we are away anyway and will be heavy underdogs as well.

There is seeding with the countries which shows up in the draw plus a c for choice for choice of venue. Most of the  seeded countries in the draw we have last  played in the dIstant past pre 1993 such as U S A, Australia, Germany, Spain, France would have home advantage over us. Rumania and Slovakia would be home draws us.

Im not really sure why Im arguing but. Here is the draw

Australia (c) v Slovakia
Italy (c) v France
USA (c) v Ukraine
Czech Republic (c)* v Great Britain
Belarus (c)* v Belgium
Kazakhstan (c)* v Germany
Canada (c)* v Latvia
Netherlands (c)* v Spain
Poland (c)* v Romania

Our match versus Czech was determined by lot which is what the asterisk denotes. Czech won that and so the c means they have home draw. The other cs denote the choice as now is in that respective match - not who would have got home draw in all matches. Each one is specific match dependent . As it happens most of the seeds got a home draw but not all. Czechs get home draw against us by lottery

My point being it was nothing to do with us being in regional groups historically just the way our history versus the seeded nations this time ended up playing out. Anyway, Ill leave it there as its not a worth debate !

Once again seeded nations do not have default home advantage. If you don't believe what everyone is telling you, here is the rule

28.2 Qualifiers and Play-offs (Choice of Ground)
28.2.1 The venue for Qualifier Ties and Play-off Ties is determined by the
Nation that has Choice of Ground (save if Regulation 28.2.5.2 applies).
Choice of Ground will be determined in the following sequence:

28.2.1.1 If the Nations have played each other in one or more previous
editions of the Billie Jean King Cup competition, the Nation
that did not have the choice in their most recent meeting will
have choice in the Competition. Ties played (i) prior to 1995,
(ii) in the Finals Week, and (iii) in Groups I and below do not
count for these purposes.
28.2.1.2 If Regulation 28.2.1.1 does not apply, Choice of Ground will
be decided by lot

Rules is rules but what  ever happens with Fed /BJ King cup we seem  guaranteed an away tie. Stsrting back in 2012, away has been Sweden, Argentina, Rumania,Japan, Slovakia Mexico,  and Czech Republic  with just one home tie against Kazakstan Mexico was transferred  for Covid reasons.I give us no hope of beating Czech Republic even if they don't  play their top players. Assuming they play on clay we have a top, player in  Emma who has never played 1 match on clay as a senior. I would be amazed if Jo plays assuming she has not retired from tennis. Harriet and Katie B, have performed better than Heather in the Cup in recent times. An academic event for us.
