Hannah Klugman

Hannah is the talk of young tennis, worldwide.

She's only 12. Born 2009.

She's a tall-ish girl, with a super serve, especially given her age, moves well, very lucid, turns defence into attack very effectively.

Her match in Les Petits As (the top world event for U14s) against the other 2009-born star, Ksenia Efremova, was in all the tennis press, and very widely anticipated. (Ksenia is the starlet of Patrick Mouratoglou). All the photos before were of Ksenia - all the talk was about her.

And Hannah walked it. In a very well-played match, that has really got the French tennis community talking.

Anyway, she deserves a thread - this might be one that runs and runs

NB She also won the adult British Tour event back in May 2021.

I watched the match last night and was very impressed. To quote the commentators, magnifique.

Her ambitions, as of last December, were
"In one year I really want to win this really big under 14 tennis Europe called Tarbes. In five years I'd really like to play Junior Wimbledon or maybe even Wimbledon if I could. At 20 I'd really love to be a Grand Slam winner."

Which is SO much more intelligent that Ksenia's version which is "I want to be the world number 1 by 16 and win all the Grand Slams".

This thread is here to stay I agree.
I remember seeing her at her local club hitting at the age 7 and even then she's been special with the serve and solid forehand.
More importantly her attitude to tennis is still casual, unpretentious, measured thanks to her parents I guess unlike some other juniors and their very pushy parents out there.
We will hear more of her in years to come but hope not too soon and she can enjoy her school years, friends and other sports while still laving her signature in event like Tarbes, and junior slams.

 Welcome WTATF.

It's great that Emma Rad has shown that you can still concentrate on school and enjoy having your school friends. And then go conquer the world

I really hope that what Emma has achieved sets a template for future junior tennis players and we will start to see less long term injuries from overplaying while young.  Talent will out and if a player isn't that talented then it makes sense to focus on education anyway and see where the tennis takes you after A levels.  Anton has done a similar thing on the Mens side, staying in his school and managing the tennis around that.

I think, to be fair, a lot of our players have stayed in education to do A levels - pretty sure Harriet did, and Jodie, and Aidan, and quite a few others....

Doesn't mean that they all avoid injury though, unfortunately.....or, indeed, achieve great tennis success.

But, yes, it's good to see Hannah's sane and normal life compared with that of Ksenia's, for instance, in her videos.

Emma has had some injury problems too, we are very fortunate that she is an outstanding athlete on which you can build a tennis player, personally would love to see some more less academic tennis players, Jack Grealish, Beckham, & Rooney were never going to star in the class room but have outstanding sporting IQs

Ah yes this plays into tennis being seen as a white collar sport I guess, not for working class people who are generally more expected to attend boxing, football or running clubs. I had personal experience of this as I grew up in a working class area of Burnley (UK) and I didn't even know where the tennis club was until I looked it up recently on the internet, decades after I left the place.

Welcome to the board Neil. I have friends in Burnley and came close to moving there several years ago. One thing very different to my home in the South East was that several of them played in a tennis league. It was a very casual affair but after watching a couple of them pay matches arranged in local parks early evening, I returned home determined to do the same and could find no such thing at the time. Tennis Clubs in Burnley though I admit to having no knowledge of :(

Thanks Shhh. I remembered after posting that there used to be a tennis court right in front of the secondary school that I attended in Burnley but the trouble was that I never saw anybody using it, ever, it was all football and cricket and occasionally some field and track when I was at school in the 1970s.  Burnley tennis club (as far as I can tell there is only one) was on the other side of town from me, passed Turf Moor football ground.

I fear I'm taking us away from the subject of Hannah Klugman however who I've just been watching on Youtube. She is a very impressive talent for 12 but I'm thinking about what Roger Federer's early coach said (his name escapes me just now) when Gregory Howe asked him if he recognised RF as a potential champion at 14 he said something like 'I can't tell you who will be a champion at 14 but I can tell you who won't be...'
