Sam - played better than I expected, a few poor volleys cost her in the 3rd set. Lots of super tennis from her. A good effort.
Emma - Struggled in the heat. Started the match dominating the play then went passive for a lengthy spell, relying on errors from Mariam for the break to make it *5-3. Combination of serve out wide followed by either a forehand into the vacant space or a back behind Mariam, worked well throughout the match. Recovered well after being broken for 2-4* in the 2nd set, aggressive tennis winning her all four points as she broke to love. Mariam gifted her the break for *6-5 with two forehand errors and then two dfs.
Fran - Jaqueline had too much quality. Fran played a few good points.
Jodie - So close. Great first set. Could have done with serving better at the start of the 2nd set. Was playing well in the third but never threatened a two break lead. A poor forehand error into the net at 0-30 6-5* was costly, although she did force one mp in that game.
Harriet - Got the win. A horrible match to watch. 43% first serve percentage.
Katie - Brutal ball striking from both players. Some incredible shots from Vitalia, especially during her 2nd set comeback.
Went to bed with Jodie 4-1 up in the 3rd set, Katie cruising and wake up to drama. The 3 that I 'expected' to get through, did. Shame for Jodie but 3 of our Women have 20 points more than I expected so a reasonably successful trip.
Yes. A great set of results. Fran played fine but was beaten faire and square. Sam played better than expected - I think her husband has had an influence - she comes in a lot more, often very effectively - wouldn't be surprised if that's him
Emma was always winning, imo, even if not in style always. Harriet too was the better player overall. Didn't see Katie's third set but she should have won in two.
Only jodies is the heart breaker. And tbh no one expected her in that round, or to be that close.
It is the first time that Emma has been in qualifying in a Grand Slam other than Wimbledon. So a win today would be her 1st Grand Slam qualification. However Katie has been playing considerably longer and has never qualified in any Grand Slam. By way of contrast Harriet has qualified for both Australia and US Opens in fhe past.
Great match point, but unfortunately goes the other way. Did Jodie choke this win away or did her opponent play well to get it back?
Yes, agree with PaulM
This was not a choke (I'd say Katie's second set end was more of a choke - and LOVE the Jeremey Bates quip - I'm rather afraid Katie's mum is too matey and rather in awe of Jeremy - it would Katie good to have a change, even if you're a Jeremy fan - are there any?)
But back to Jodie....
Yes, you can say that from that lead in the third she 'should' have done better. But it was only one break.
She didn't lose her cool. She played her game - went for shots, without being crazy.
The only thing that I feel cost her was that she made way too many mistakes off the serve, particularly the second serve. You can't just keep missing so many second serve returns. She needed to 'enfonce le clou' as the French say i.e. hit her when she's down, drive it home, not give her wriggle room.
And, yes, Stef was quite wily and played her percentages. Mind you, she looked very relieved - and a little surprised - to have won.
But Jodie really played some excellent tennis.
I preferred Jeremy Bates as a player than a coach. Has he actually achieved anything as a coach?
I honestly believe he far prefers being a player than a coach.
Which isn't a criticism. Just don't be a coach.
About 5 years ago, I was next to him (happy days!) for a couple of hours, watching Katie Boutler - I've never seen such a dour, miserable, face and demeanour - and everything he said (to her, to her mum, to anyone) was like a load of wet fish. She lost.
THEN it started to rain and we were all in the clubhouse - and a couple of older top players were around and they were chatting (they might all have been still playing the veteran circuit) - and, my god, he was animated, he was happy, talking about matches, and joking with mates, etc. etc.
The man's a good veteran (now) tennis player, not a coach of youngsters.
