Girls & Boys: J5 Edinburgh, UK - clay (outdoor) (Week 27)

The J5 event in Edinburgh this week is practically 100% British - there's barely a foreign player (less than in the 'closed' events we had earlier)

I'm also assuming quite a few of the top entrants won't be there as they have/had wildcards into Wimbly (i.e. Issey Purser and Jaquie O, for instance, have played wimbly qualis this weekend and you can't play two week 27 events at the same time, no?)

Which means it will be even more of a points fest for some of the lower ranked GB players.

Although, again, I'm surprised at the lack of known names who are there.

Lots of BYES in the quali R1 too.

The FQR for the girls takes place today (one Romanian girl, the rest GB)

The boys are at QR2 stage - all GB - but play two rounds, I believe.

(NB Love the fact that the courts are referred to as Thistle 1, Thistle 2 etc)

The rules are complicated, but my reading of them is that having played Wimbledon qualifying they cannot play another tournament in the same week, apart from exceptional circumstances such as late nomination for team competitions - which doesn't apply in this case ( if on the other hand they had been in qualifying for the professional Wimbledon main draw, they would have been allowed to accept a wildcard into an ITF junior event if they had lost before the sign-in deadline for qualifying for the ITF junior event)

In the boys, qualification for young Ben Gusic Wan, who is reasonably well known in the junior section of this forum.

The other three lads are new names to me: Jack Deveney; Luke McFarlane; and Brooklyn Bamburac

In the girls, the Romanian lost, leaving four GB qualifiers, namely: Hima Fernando; Athina Schlepphorst; Dina Lipovski; and Erin Pearce

In the boys, Charlie Robertson put out the 6th seed from Cyprus. So it's now an all-Brit affair.

Freddy Blaydes, seeded 8, and Tom Aston, seeded 4, also lost - both in tight three setters.

In the girls, only a couple of matches got finished before (I assume) the weather set in.

The girls R1 has finished.

The 'shocks' are that Anjali Kotecha (age 15) put out the second seed, Millie Skelton

Also, the real youngster, Ruby Cooling (age 13) who did very well at Stirling recently, beat the 4th seed, Lucia Rizza

The 8th seed, Maria Ustic, also lost to Adeola Greatorex.

R2 results of note:

Boys:

James Connel put out the second seed.
The top seed, Sam Reeve, got through in three sets.
Young Ben Gusic Wan (age 13) put out the 3rd see, with ease.
Next Monday will be the first time the youngster has been ranked - great moment

Girls:

Anjali and Adeola (mentioned above) both won and will play each other
Ella MacDonald (seeded 1) will play Alaia Rubio Perez (seeded 7)
Nice to see Talia N-G doing well (she's been plagued with injuries, poor kid)
Emma Cohen beat 5th seed, Flora Johnson
Wildcard Amelie Brooks (age 14) is also through to the quarters

Emma Cohen v Adeola Greatorex

James Connel def. (7) Henry Searle 6-2 6-0

FINAL: (wc) (5) Jamie Diack 1676 (age 15) v James Connel JWR 2315 (age 18)

You been down to Craiglockhart this week at all Indy?

www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/j5-edinburgh/gbr/2021/j-g5-gbr-04a-2021/order-of-play/

I see it is clay this week - does the club still have grass courts? I recall a famous McEnroe v Connors Scottish Championships FInal there back in the late 80s

No. Haven't been down. Haven't been for a few years but all the outside courts had been turned to clay then.

And congrats to all:

FINAL: James Connel JWR 2315 (age 18) def. (wc) (5) Jamie Diack 1676 (age 15) 6-4 6-0

FINAL: (3) Talia Neilson-Gatenby JWR 896 (age 15) v Adeola Greatorex JWR 2009 (age 16) 6-7(2) 6-1 6-3

Talia does the double as she and Millie Skelton take the dubs title, over Alaia Perez Rubio and Anjali Kotecha

James Connel also does the double, taking the dubs title with Ben Hudson, over Jamie Diack and 13 year-old Ben Gusic Wan (poor Jamie comes out on the wrong side of both finals but has had a great week)
