RE: Week 26 - Wimbledon - London (grass) - women's main draw

I can see Emma and Katie being the top two within 12 months, with the caveat that Id say we have a year or so of this being at a lower overall level as Jo and Hev drop off and the two of them slowly climb. Jo I think will be looking to the future sooner rather than later, not to say imminent retirement but I can imagine her planning another couple of years to finish on her own terms if possible.

Many of the young players who break through fast have a period of stagnation (for want of a better word) as they adjust to a higher level , see Coco Iga Kostyuk so I hope Emma is kept level headed when her next results inevitably arent quite this strong. From what Ive seen of her attitude so far though I dont think this will take long

I wonder how Katie B would have done with this draw incidentally. I hope Emma not just being plucky Brit loser spurs her on to believe she can win these higher profile matches too.

I think Jo's knee problems  might dictate how much longer she plays. Katie B. always has if stays fit attached. Why is it when a young  British female tennis player shows promise the  media always tells us how many millions they  can  make in sponsorship. What is being written about Emma  now is like what was written about Laura Robson in 2013. That did not end happily  because of injury  soon afterwards.

I don't think that is an issue with Katie B, she knows she has the capability to be up there. One change I've noticed recently is Katie gets into the match a lot quicker than she used to. She seemed to have this habit of starting slowly which is fine at the lower level with her talent but not higher up but seems to have massively improved there.  A run of fitness and Katie is going to be top 50. As Emma has shown, get yourself into a grandslam MD, and all you need are 3 or 4 wins to make life a lot easier going forward.  Katie B is now ranked high enough to get into Slam qualifying and there aren't many players between 100-200 that she won't be the favourite to beat so she should start moving up the rankings quickly again.

I wonder what Joanna Garland is thinking of all this? She's 16 months older than Emma, was about 170 ranking places lower (before this weeks) and far less promising IMO, but they've obviously had junior battles in the past, no less than at Wimbledon a few years ago (something Emma referenced a couple of days ago). She will have seen Emma get a WC for Nottm W100, something she probably could have had, probably would have been in line for a Wimbledon QWC (especially with some not being used), also with a chance for that to be boosted to a full MDWC, if she got a result or two on the grass, but while Emma is generating stories, and creating buzz left, right and centre, and an astonishing 240 ranking points from one event alone, she's has finally returned to the tour herself, and has made 10 points from 3 ITF events in as many weeks (although she did actually put out the #241 top seed in R1 of a W25, before bowing out in R2).

She's probably perfectly happy representing Taiwan, and to continue to do so, but there's surely got to be a bit of a 'what if' scenario lurking somewhere.

There's a never ending combination of what if scenarios that can be run by a multitude of British junior / senior players when looking at what was achieved; but bear in mind that there are  several GB players that weren't given these WCs mentioned above  (several discussions held on this forum already about unused WCs)  so it's not a given that Joanna would have benefited from them if she represented GB.

She's still (just about) a teenager, solid junior, reached a number of W15 finals, and won titles at the back end of last year, ranking of circa 500 - she would surely be well up the WC pecking order if she had a 'GBR' flag next to her name. Who did you have in mind that were overlooked? Whether she could actually win a match on grass is a different story, there were obviously a fair few Brit's this year who lost all of their grass matches this year, but I'm sure the initial opportunity would have at least been there for her.

I just hope Emma's career doesn't go the same way Laura and countless other player's have done.

Given Coco is only 17, and is already WTA 23, and the logarithmic nature of any rankings table, I hardly think you can say she's stagnated

Haha yes! Not the right word I know, but often the expectation is theyre good enough now and surprise when they dont suddenly win a GS. In the general public and media eyes.

oh I agree with you she knows shes up there, and the slow starts seem to be disappearing. Its that killer instinct to close out the really big matches I think she could develop further. Katie B is my favourite of the younger players - Im desperate for her to have that really big win (like potentially last week!) to get her going again on the top level.

My impression over time has been that Katie has been generally a pretty good match player on bigger occasions and without checking back extensively I can certainly recall some tight ones that she has got over the line. She doesn't tend to fling good positions away once she gets there ( as has been said, often previously after a slow start ) and is more beaten by opposition play than beats herself. She's definitely better than many in that regard.

Ka. Pliskova through to her 1st Wimbledon quarter final . Remarkable it took so long when you think of her 3  Eastbourne finals over the years.

Ash Barty is also through to her first Wimbledon singles QF where she will face Radacanu or Tomljanovic.

So Barty, having been first up on Court 1, sits pretty for tomorrow and Emma and Tomljanovic are on 3rd on the same court, following the FAA vs Zverev match which at 4.35 pm is still early in the second set.

That's less than brilliant scheduling.

Felix/Sascha took 55 mins to get to 4-4

It now looks as though it's going towards one set all......

As you say, it could be there for ages....

Yes, you just shouldn't put on a women's L16 match 3rd on one of the two later starting showcourts on the Monday with the QFs on Tuesday, especially with the potential QF opponent finishing much earlier.

I wonder if the Beeb had any input? Remember how Andy has so often been scheduled for late afternoon / evening.

Angie Kerber beats Coco Gauff 6-4 6-4 and 7 of the 8 women's L16 matches are done and dusted.
