Week 26 - Wimbledon - London (grass) - women's main draw

I suspect Jo will play through to next year, and perhaps retire after Wimbledon. It would certainly be a shame for her not to get a proper Wimbledon goodbye after all the great moments she has delivered.

Such an absolute bummer for Jo this year though.  There are only three named people in her team,  is there any indication as to who has the virus?

If any of the 3 have school age children I'd guess them but as this variant seems much easier to transmit, it could be any of them.  If it's her partner it's almost certain she'll get it, apparently in Australia they are finding this variant has a 100% infection rate in the home, whereas that wasn't the case with other variants.

Haven't seen anything yet. Have to wait and see if she splits with anyone - fiance, coach or trainer  wink

Good point, and lets really really hope she remains negative and doesnt get poorly herself.

The pressures on Jo must be enormous. Does she call it a day because of her knee and Covid stuff? Does she follow her dream of supporting GB at the Olympics or follow Cam and go for points on the US swing, she certainly needs them. The Nottingham title suggests she still has the ability to continue a viable career but it's now much more of an uphill struggle. On the other hand, her private life looks to be in a good place to take retirement. Will be interesting to see what follows.

I actually wonder if the opposite may now becoming true in terms of pressure. The Olympics is surely a no brainer and only a few weeks away now. She won't get another chance probably so surely she will take part as long as she is fit and covid free.

Her private life is in a great place, I'm assuming she's not too short of a bob or two. As to her career in tennis, I think the last few weeks are an indication as to the future. She's nothing to prove to anyone and the drive to play week in week out whilst preserving her knee condition probably isn't really there.

Yes she showed some form and it was great to see her win Nottingham but we do need to put it into some context in that she was clearly the best player by a mile. Does she want todrag herself round the lower rated WTA tournaments just to maintain some points? I'm not sure how keen she is on travelling even without covid when her knee probably precludes he from playing week in week out in any case.

One thing is certain when she does hang up her racquet she'll leave a big hole at the top of GB tennis which doesn't look close to being filled in.

She could give the Olympics and the US open a go without any real pressure as expectations will be low in any case. Sometimes events such as this make decisions easier to make but we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for your perspective HarryGem. Much appreciated.

I'm really not sure myself where Jo actually is. She talks of being around for a couple of years yet but at the same time I agree with you, it looks too uphill a struggle if she has to take extended breaks, go without seeding and even go through qualifying. Not sure if she has enough clout for WCs globally, although I think she might have more than we realise in places like Italy and N America, where she's been successful and with the WTA, where she's been active and supportive on the players council for years. I think losing the Brit No 1 status might be one trigger to her retirement.

IF (big IF) she were to opt for points over the Olympics it would at least send out a clear message and leave her potentially better placed for a seeding at the US Open but agree her frequently mentioned love for the Rio experience will most likely be the bigger draw and will still give us some indication, in the absence of Wimbledon, where her game actually is. Remember, the next Olympics is only 3 years away and Jo would be (only!) 33.

Wrong thread but well done Jack, a set up against Djokovic!!

Jamie Murray is the first fellow Brit I'm aware of, to come out in support of Jo in her "terrible situation", he calls it "rubbish". Although to be honest, it comes off the back of his anger at being rejected for the Olympics.

Reckon they might move one/two of the brits to the show courts after the end of scheduled play?

There's a good chance of an extra match on No 1 court I would have thought.

This is an academic issue but  back in April Jo was hoping that she would be allowed to stay in her own home during Wimbledon rather than the hotel bubble.  If it was her fiance who tested positive it wouldn't matter where she was. But otherwise if  it was  one of  the other two who tested positive wouldn't she have been better off at home. She lives closer to Wimbledon than the hotel is to Wimbledon.

Controversial, I know but as Jo was made unable to defend her Wimbledon points I do wonder if the WTA could interpret their rule on letting players keep points they can't defend. Though intended for a tournament being cancelled due to Covid it could also be applied to Jo's situation and still be within the letter of the rule.

whoever tested positive was someone who she relied upon and trusted and would have been close to her wherever she was.

She can apply for a COVID special ranking to use in her next 4 tournaments.

A player may request a COVID Special Ranking if she: (i) has been withdrawn from a Tournament
for testing positive or being in close contact with a known positive; and (ii) misses the following
Tournament(s) because she is recovering from COVID-19 or is unable to travel.

If approved, a player's COVID Special Ranking is her WTA Ranking as of the time she was
withdrawn from the original Tournament. She may use her COVID Special Ranking to enter her
next four (4) Tournaments.

I dont think we should read anything into it though, Dan, Jack D, Andy , katie b etc etc are all playing today, or due to, and wont have done press today yet nor be lurking around social media whilst they prepare for their own matches

Thanks for that info RedSquirrel. We'll see what happens.
