Week 26 - Wimbledon - London (grass) - women's main draw

Gutted for Serena. She just seems destined not to get that final one.

For future record, Serena retired with an ankle injury at 3-3 in the first set. Might have been her last chance to win over here.

Me too. Im not a particular fan really but this would be a horrible way to finish if she retires after the US (and I suspect she will).

Funny that Venus outdid her sister this time round....

Rather nice watching Venus this morning. Sort of rolled back the years. She looks older - but don't we all......and the lady's 41 ! Pretty amazing....

The first but hopefully not the last time she'll play there. Unlike many of the other British girls she seems to get inspired playing at SW19 rather than be intimated by it.

Tough draws for Fran and Harriet with the expected results but the former I think has more potential than the latter. Dart seems to have plateaued rather than break the top 100 as looked likely a couple of years ago.

I really enjoyed Venus's win. I'd love her to have a good run, but she's got a tough match next, so unless she can roll back the years, I guess not.

The depth and power of Fran's shots were very impressive. Also her balance on a slippery court was incredible. She must put in the hours for her fitness, as balance is a barrier than her opponents don't have to worry about (generally). Coco slipped a dozen times today. Fran has the heart of a lioness. So impressed!!

I missed Fran's match, so am pleased to get a bit of a report. I haven't really come across her before. Is she one of our future hopes then?

Fran is the young woman with the rare congenital condition that affects (among other things) her fingers and toes which means that, after countless operations, she now only has three fingers on each hand, which is very narrow. And similar problems with her feet and toes.

You'll find tons of reports on her, in the press and on here. For her tennis, as well as her condition. And, yes, she played a very good match yesterday. She doesn't have an 'elegant' game, she plays a clay courter sort of game (she spent much of her teenage years in Spain), hits a very heavy, hard ball, and beat Coco for force in a lot of the points, which takes some doing. Served quite well. Took on Coco's second serve. She didn't do much wrong.

the thing i like about Fran is that she seems so solid relative to many of our girls. She has power and depth and uses top spin on her ground shots, not too flat and loose which seems to be a common problem with others. Less prone to silly errors. And she fights hard and well. Seems like a tough cookie - good Yorkshire grit!

Completely agree; if she can manage her condition well; her determination and fight is going to win her a lot of matches. Looking at a top 100 player if she can stay fit.

Two very late withdrawals - Kovinic and Tsurenko, but apparently not Covid related. Has meant Pironkova is in as a lucky loser but she's struggling against Poots.

I noticed Tsurenko pulled  out . Pironkova is playing but Putintseva  is heading for an easy win. Astra Sharma has replaced Kovinic but it is a closer match against Kr. PlIskova

Kr. Pliskova won in 3 sets so no joy for the lucky losers.
