(Kiki Mlad is annoying in many ways and, yes, the umpire should have stopped her coach talking to her directly - mind you, Jodie's coach should have pointed it out too. Or anyone in Jodie's team).

This is allowed as long as it was when Mlad was on same side as the court as her coach. Although coaching is officially against the rules, the WTA have been running a trial since early last year that allows coaches to talk to their players from the stand when the player is on the same side of the court as the coach. It was meant to be for the 2020 season but I believe is continuing because of the pandemic interruption and as on court coaching cannot currently take place.

Interesting - didn't know that. And to be fair Fran's coach was doing it too.

Harriet first up against Rybakina at 11 am on Court One (not the main court). I think Swiatek will probably be too strong for Heather on Tuesday, but I'm not without hope of Harriet causing an upset. Hope both Brits play well anyway - clearly they will need to be at their best to have any chance.

Its not raining there now - webcam of seafront - no brollies and no windscreen wipers !! So I'm not sure why play can't go ahead as planned maybe courts too damp.

It rained all day yesterday and also this morning. So very damp. Also it's extremely windy on the coast so no fun for the players today.

Eastbourne is always windy!! It would help dry the courts though.

Actually, the wind is one reason I have never really 100% liked the Eastbourne event and never liked Davis Cup there, I am afraid.

I once watched some European female player (names escapes me) have the biggest meltdown known to tennis at Surbiton - screaming at her coach (in English) : "But I HATE grass, and I HATE the wind and the thing I hate MOST is grass AND wind...." - it went on, for a while (about a whole set in fact).
Did make you wonder why she'd ever inscribed for the event in the first place....

Grass , wind and rain delays she should have added. And yes. But when it is dry, still and sunny - its the best!

I went to school 10 miles from Eastbourne, along the coast (NOT Roedean!!). We had amazing sunken grass tennis courts - Maybe that was to shelter from the wind, I don't know, but I loved it and especially liked umpiring when I was older !!!

That day, it was dry and sunny ! (although not still). It was gorgeous, in fact.

But she wasn't having any of it biggrin
