A shame to see Jodie and Fran struggling in recent weeks after starting the year so brightly.

It is but they are both still quite young and relatively inexperienced. They put up decent shows in this competition against opponents ranked far above them and who they had relatively little chance of beating.
In fact all 4 Gb ladies had tough qualifying draws. A reflection really of the fact that this level of tournament is frankly above their ability level as things stand right now.
Jodie is a bit frustrating as she has talent but doesn't seem able to harness it consistently. Syill young enough to learn and improve though.
very difficult matches for both Heather and Hariett.

Was there yesterday and luckily the rain stayed away (until after I left anyway)
Burrage started at an amazing level. Kiki's coach was a bit annoying, constantly talking to her in French, but umpire didn't seem to mind. Somewhere in the second set her backhand stopped working and as others said she faded badly. Kiki got a big slice of luck at a crucial moment in third set though which could have turned things around.
Jones I was impressed with. What a great attitude but my god Pera was incredible first set. So powerful and accurate and Jones did well to stay with her. Only issue was DF's at really bad moments. Is Jones part Italian? Her coach was and they were speaking in a language that wasn't English.
Annoyingly the outside courts were inaccessible in that you could not walk down the aisles between courts. So saw both Gray and Lui from a distance. Gombos is huge but was a really credible effort from Lui on his ATP debut. Saw a couple of guys from his local West Worthing club supporting him but shame he really had no support.
Alistair was on Court 2 which did have some fans and he really has a game made for grass wheras Kwon didn't. Great result for him.
Didn't see any of Sam. Did see Sarah-Beth (and EWS supporting her) but less said about her game the better.
Don't really understand why Jack and Aidan not playing here?
Great report, seagull. Thanks. So glad you got a good day of tennis.
And the news from the women seems encouraging, overall. Sounds like both Fran and Jodie really came close.
(Kiki Mlad is annoying in many ways and, yes, the umpire should have stopped her coach talking to her directly - mind you, Jodie's coach should have pointed it out too. Or anyone in Jodie's team).
NB The LTA website says re Fran Jones:
"At the age of nine she moved to Spain to train at the Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy to further her tennis career. At age 16 moved to Ad-In Tennis Academy (also in Barcelona) where she was based for two years and met her current coach Andreu Giulera".
So guessing it was Spanish she was talking.
Good to hear re the boys too - I was quite gripped with the livestream of those yesterday (didn't get the girls' ones, to be fair).

This is allowed as long as it was when Mlad was on same side as the court as her coach. Although coaching is officially against the rules, the WTA have been running a trial since early last year that allows coaches to talk to their players from the stand when the player is on the same side of the court as the coach. It was meant to be for the 2020 season but I believe is continuing because of the pandemic interruption and as on court coaching cannot currently take place.
