Is Stosur getting a WC a WTA rule for former Slam champion or did she get picked by the LTA over one of the Brits?
I think the latter.
But it doesn't seem that unreasonable. She's a grand slam winner, a very well known name, and there are a lot of people in the UK who are Aussies or with Aussie sympathies and connections.
In terms of pleasing the fans, they've done the right thing.
ADD: But see Red Squirrel below - thanks, RS, for explaining the rule. I still think the tournament will be quite happy about it, though.

LTA didn't have a choice. In a 250 if a player meeting the eligibility criteria for a Top 20 WC, which being a Slam winner does, requests one then she must be given it. The LTA would only have a say if there 3 or more players requesting a Top 20 WC. I'm sure the LTA would have preferred she hadn't so It would have reverted to a normal WC for another Brit.
Hard to see any wins in the main draw but I am open to being surprised!
Can see both Harriet and Heather winning.
A great great shame this tournament has been down graded. It is an ok entry list but nothing more than that and a great shame that anyone who wants to be able to watch the top women players live in the UK now has to trudge down to Eastbourne or hope to get a ticket to Wimbledon.
Also a great pity that Jo has withdrawn though with her knee that is understandable. However, one would have to wonder about the wisdom of her playing Eastbourne the week before Wimbledon if she's not capable of playing two weeks in a row. I guess it is her home tournament but must be a risk to her knee.

I think Jo only withdrew because she has gone further into this tournament plus she entered and played a couple of doubles matches too. At the moment it looks as though the knee is not causing an issue
Yes, hopefully it's much more about not playing all of Nottingham, Birmingham, Eastbourne and Wimbledon in a row, especially after such a run at Nottingham, rather than being incapable of playing 2 wesks in a row.
Choosing to now miss Birmingham would have made some sense even with no knee doubts at all, though she may have gone for it. So hopefully at worst a precautionary withdrawal rather than a reactive one.
A fair few withdrawals mean two our advanced entry pairs (Heather/Harriet, Tara/Eden) have made it into the draw here, meaning a wildcard available for Em and Beth, and they've all got (compartively) good draws. Naiktha has also sneaked in with Martincova with a second wildcard.
I had expected the cut to be much higher than it has turned out to be, which would have meant some of the girls needing to go back to Nottingham for match play. That might have been the better hunting ground in terms of the field, but a single win here if they can sneak them is worth just above a 100k+H semi final.
