Week 23 - WTA 250 - Viking Open, Nottingham (grass)

Seems to be a big week all round for the British Girls. I make it 26 on the entry lists for singles this week, with a couple more possibly playing doubles only.

Ha, if Eden and Beth got the Q vs Q draw.

From not in at all to Q alts to the winner into MD R2 wirh 28 ranking points and the loser still wirh 12 points.

Huge opportunity for both. Beth gets Kung. 2 lucky loser spots but Sam not among them.

Melnikova must have got a LL spot as she lost to CoCo V today. It would have probably been asking too much for Sam to have sneaked that (if she was even in contention for it anyway).

Edit - 2 as Paul says, Tara's opponent the other to benefit.

Di Giuseppe also got a LL spot.

Collins and Giorgi out, possibly two of the more bigger general attractions in the draw, certainly thinking from a TF POV, so the draw has been re-jigged a bit, and Martincova now the 17th seed and moves away from Jo's section. Surely that's a great opportunity for Jo to string back to back wins for the first time since Cincy, especially as the potentially dangerous Vandeweghe isn't the Q in her section.

J. Konta (1) v BYE
M. Inglis v L. Pattinama Kerkhove (Q)
A. Gasanova v K. Kozlova (Q)
BYE v M. Brengle (13)

V. Golubic (10) v BYE
K. Ahn v J. Burrage (WC)
K. Volynets (Q) v M. Melnikova (LL)
BYE v A. Van Uytvanck (8)

D. Vekic (3) v BYE
L. Kung v S. Grey (Q)
O. Dodin v C. Vandeweghe (Q)
BYE v N. Stojanovic (15)

C. McHale (18) v BYE
F. Jones (WC) v A. Sharma
C. Dolehide v G. Gatto-Monticone
BYE v T. Martincova (17)

K. Mladenovic (7) v BYE
V. Tomova v K. Nara
C. McNally v A. Raina (Q)
BYE v N. Hibino (12)

Z. Diyas (16) v BYE
Y. Wang v L. Cabrera
A. Rodionova v X. Wang
BYE v S. Zhang (4)

M. Bouzkova (6) v BYE
M. Osorio Serrano v K. Boulter (WC)
E. Silva (Q) v T. Moore (Q)
BYE v H. Watson (9)

L. Davis (14) v BYE
E. Raducanu (WC) v H. Dart
M. Di Giuseppe (LL) v X. Wang
BYE v A. Riske (2)

Guaranteed to have FOUR in the last 32, and it's nice to see so much bolding smile

And much better for Heather too to lose McHale from her round 2 opponent.

Jodie followed by Eden v Tara followed by Beth on Centre tomorrow.

Great opportunities for all 4. Big court, a crowd, and BBC coverage.

And guaranteed one in the L16. Much promise in that bottom quarter

Well I'm going to stick my neck on the line and say I will be very disappointed not to have an all GB final here. Generally this is a very weak line up. Vekic has barley played all year, same with Riske who seems to ahve a recurrent injury issue. Mladenovic is frankly a basket case in the singles.

This is a brilliant chance for several GB women to gather some ranking points and some cash to go with them. Simply no excuses for not doing well on home soil against a lot of the opponents now left. The rejigged FO has royally messed up this tournament and I feel sorry for the organisers who will have gone to great lengths to get this tournament up and running and safely too.

It is a fantastic opportunity for Jo to finally win here and I see one of Katie B or Harriet being the other finalist.

So my advice.. don't bet on any of them.

Automatically assumed you were referring to Heather there HarryG after reading that first line, I never really considered Harriet or Katie as actual genuine title contenders (don't really see Heather either), but you never know, they have both beaten decent WTA players on grass.

I'd be very interested to see the outright odds when they come out, just to see who are considered the favourites. I'd imagine the top 3 seeds would probably be the top 3, due to their grass pedigree, despite their lack of form / wins / injuries, and the byes should certainly help those, not having to win 6 matches.

I'd go for a Van de Weghe-McNally final.
