I'd thought David would start a dedicated thread for this. (Hope everything's OK, David)
But we should have one as it's more important this year, with Wimbly wildcards at stake (junior and adults)
I thought it best to put the U16 and U18 together, as they follow on, one week to the next and they are the two with the wildcard implications.
U16 is this week
U18 next week
As a reminder:
Up for grabs are:
A wild card into the qualifying event for Wimbledon, as well as a wild card into the main draw of the Wimbledon junior championships for the U18 male and female winners.
A wild card into the main draw of the Wimbledon junior championships for the U18 male and female runners-up.
A wild card into the main draw of the Wimbledon junior championships for the U16 male and female winners.
A wild card into the qualifying event of the junior championships for the U16 male and female runners-up.
"Slightly confused by the seedings/entries for the Junior Nationals which don't seem to follow ITF rankings at all. U16s has started, two courts being streamed. Surbiton grass looks beautiful as always."
"Just watched the end of a very good match between her and Jacqueline Ogunwale in the first round of the U16 nationals. She is talented.
I'm very confused by the LTA organisation here though, like why both these girls are in qualifying for the U18s when their ITF rankings are higher than several of those accepted for the main draw (and they aren't even seeded in qualies). Indeed, going on ITF rankings Jacqueline would have been seeded in the U16s but assume they are using something else for that purpose."
Madadman:
Looks like they are using the LTA combined rankings for that age.
I'm fine thanks CD - sorry I left the Nationals this year, as there was such keen interest in the closed Grade 5s that I guessed someone would set up a thread (you did in the end ), and have only just got round to checking.
As far as I can see the French Open juniors has only removed Matilda from the u18 girls, boys may be more affected. As for the acceptances the Nationals are LTA tournaments so using LTA rankings for acceptances, quite rightly as not ITF tournaments. This gives all those who haven't done many, or even any, itf juniors a chance to come through. I think this is a welcome development, as a high itf junior ranking depends not just on tennis ability but on spending a large amount on travel and accommodation, usually for several years to get top 100 or better to get near junior wimbledon direct entry or perhaps wc.
Yeah, I hadn't realised what David had pointed out, about the effect of the RG change of week.
However, given one's clay and one's grass, were they all intending to play both? One week straight after the other? It's not ideal.
For players like Matilda and Jack, I don't think it makes much difference - I would imagine they'll get their Wimbly qualis WC (and the title itself has never been viewed as anything special - although that hopefully will change - so presumably they don't care)
But, yes, for someone like Lui, it's the most irritating, I'd have thought.
Am I missing something? If RG hadn't been moved back a week Junior RG would have been this week? The 18U and 16U Junior Nationals were meant to be played over the Easter holidays, and the postponement to now due to COVID restrictions has the bigger impact, does it not?
Question - I notice a number of the under 16s last 4 are in the u18s field, eg Hep or Phoenix.
Has any player in the past won both u16 and u18 in the same year - is that a completely silly question? It must be remote but has any player gone close at all?

2018 Holly Staff won girls' u16 and u18.
Thats good to read - do you know if there is a list of past winners anywhere on line, I couldnt find one.

Don't know about elsewhere online but they're all on this forum - David does a thread in August for all the national championships from U18 down to U12 - bit awkward but if you look back you'll find them all
