This event is listed as outdoor, unlike last week's indoor.
Many of the same players, obviously.
A little shout out immediately for 2007-born Flora Johnson who has just put out the top seed, Jaquelyn Ogunwale, in two sets.
Also, Lois Newberry, also 2007, who has beaten the third seed, Lucy Webber, also in two sets.
Pity the Blaydes family - for the second time, in two weeks, the two boys ended up playing each other - Billy (the elder) triumphed both times but a little irritating, especially this week, being the first round.
A few late withdrawals in the girls and boys events And a few surprises. Hannah Read losing to 14 year old Ava Williamson 6-3 1-6 2-6. flora Johnson at 13 years old beat number 1 Jaqueline Ogunwale number 1 seed 7-6 6-0. Ellie Blackford beating Tabitha Holmes 6-1 6-1 and lois Newberry beating Lucy Webber again 6-3 6-4.
the bottom half of the girls looks to have some tougher matches with Millie Skelton last weeks winner playing Isabelle Lacey first round and with Mimi Xui and Issey Purser also in the lower half of the draw.
in the boys number 4 seed Sam reeves lost to Miles Groom 7-6 6-4, young Jamie Diack had a great result beating Jonah Gethin in a tough 3 set match 6-3 6-7 6-4.
many matches postponed to today due to weather and with a few late withdrawals including last weeks winner Roan Jones and finalist Hannah Smith, the draw isnt as strong as it could be .
would have been good to see more of the top girls players playing this week such as Hephzibah, Eva, Given, Ranah, Kylie, Imogen but see many are entered into Felixstowe then the nationals in Surbiton presumably in preparation for Roehampton and Wimbledon On the grass with wildcards being offered to the winners and runners up of the nationals.
indeed, as a reminder, dates of nationals and summary of WC situation below
Junior National Tennis Championships
2019 Junior National Tennis Championships winners
The Junior National Championships are the highest level of domestic competition for all junior players and the highlight of the domestic competition calendar.
We are incredibly excited about delivering the 18U & 16U National Championships in 2021. A number of key changes were made for 2020, although unfortunately due to COVID-19 ultimately the 2020 events had to be cancelled. Along with the exciting incentives on offer, we hope that this will result in a fantastic and competitive tournament that provides a great experience for players, parents, coaches and spectators (although at this stage it is still to be determined what COVID protocols will still need to be in place at the time, which will be communicated nearer the event).
The change of dates to the 18U and 16U National Championships for 2020 had given us the chance, in partnership with the All England Club, to offer exciting Wimbledon wild card opportunities for the winners and runners up of the Singles events. For 2021 the 18U & 16U events were originally scheduled to take place in consecutive weeks during the Easter holidays however, due to COVID related restrictions have now been moved to the end of May / early June period.
The 18U & 16U events for 2021 will now take place on grass at the Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club (home of the hugely popular pre-Wimbledon Surbiton Trophy event) on the following dates:
16U Nationals: Qualifying-Sunday 30 to Monday 31 May 2021. Main draw- Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 June 2021
18U Nationals: Qualifying-Saturday 5 to Sunday 6 June 2021. Main draw- Tuesday 8 to Friday 11 June 2021
The 18U National Champion, in both the girls and boys events, will receive a wild card into the qualifying event of The Championships, Wimbledon, as well as a wild card into the main draw of The Junior Championships, Wimbledon. The runners up will also receive a wild card into the main draw of The Junior Championships, Wimbledon.
In the 16U event the winners will receive a wild card into the main draw of The Junior Championships, Wimbledon and the runners up will receive a wild card into the qualifying event of The Junior Championships, Wimbledon.
The 12U and 14U events will both take place at the Nottingham Tennis Centre on the originally scheduled dates of Monday 16 Saturday 21 August 2021.
The 'big' result in the girls is that last week's champion, Millie Skelton, was beaten in two sets by last week's 'surprise star', Isabelle Lacy, age 14
14 year-old Lois Newberry (from Brompton Tennis Centre) continues to really impress - she defeated 18 year-old fifth seed, Millie Mae Matthews, today - although Millie had to retire in the third set.
Glad they gave her a wildcard this week (based on last week's form - she made the QFs and only lost there, 4-6 in the third). Will be interesting to see her semi against Ellie B
