If Evo wants to be taken seriously, he needs to quit this doubles malarkey.  I can understand players ranked 40-100 playing doubles, to earn extra money, but no serious players e.g. top 20 that compete for big evens waste their time with doubles.

There are LOTS of singles players who enter doubles at big events to gain court experience at new/different surfaces - it is NOT just about the money which is a pittance for doubles teams.  Doubles is also a very good way to sharpen reflexes at the net and gain all round court craft in an era when baseline play has outweighed all round court experience including serve/volley. Evo won't be the only player to use doubles play to his advantage.

You are missing the point, imagine Zverev or Medvedev, getting into the 2nd week of a slam, and having to go 4 and 5 sets back to back, and then also having to play doubles, is too demanding. Any player that plays doubles, is actually admitting to themselves that they do not believe in themselves or back themselves to reach latter stage of events.

Surely Dan is playing doubles to get court time primarily and on clay , and maybe because he enjoys it. McEnroe played doubles and was the best ever IMHO, as well as being possibly the most talented singles player and possibly the best of his era. He played it to sharpen his game and played much more singles tennis than any top player today.

Yes to all of that.  And let's not forget that many other singles players have latched onto a doubles event simply to gain match experience on a new surface or acclimatise to certain conditions.

I think Dan is being sensible. Apart from anything else he clearly enjoys Neals' company and that in itself enhances their potential success as a doubles team, gives Neal valuable points and keeps Dan sharp at the net when so much other play on clay courts is from backcourt slogging.

Perhaps Dan dosen't like the gym too much and playing extra matches is his way of staying in his best form?

Also, as good as Dan is he isn't Medvedev or Zverev.

Interesting video retweeted on the Dan Evans Fan Page of him and Moutet arguing at the end, couldn't quite catch it all but Moutet appeared to be accusing Dan of disrespecting him and Dan took exception to this and said "let's see if your mates are there"!!

Exactly and that was also the McEnroe logic

My feeling was that Dan started off in the doubles at the beginning of the clay season because he thought there was a decent chance he'd be knocked out in the first round of the singles, and he'd get bored with nothing to do all week, and you might as well be playing.

I know Dan rates himself, and quite rightly, but I guess he's pretty surprised how well he's done in the singles.

But once he started, (a) you don't want to let your partner down, and (b) he may well have also been surprised quite how much he was enjoying it.

There's also a reasonable chance that Prieto also told him to do the doubles - so he could put the things they were working on into practice, so he could watch more of him directly, in match play.

NB Re yesterday, there was definitely a big French contingent watching from the stands (at least 4 of the French players, maybe more). I don't think they were being particularly noisy, I didn't really hear them, (and Roger-V, and P-H H are generally pretty well-behaved sort of players), but they were obviously more vocal and 'present' than Dan's camp; it certainly seemed to rile Dan a bit.

Cameron Norrie bagelled David Goffin in the first set. The Belgian is playing better in the 2nd.
