I don't know of any nationals coming up at the NTC as yet, there is another National Youth Series taking place on the 26th. Similar players entered.

Yes I think they tried to group similar players together, was a one day event. Looks like at Notts they played the Loughborough academy vs the Stirling academy in the girls only 2 Loughborough girls played with Ella McDonald beating ranah Stoiber in a tight 3 set match and Mimi Xui beating Hannah Read 2&0. In the boys Henry Searle beating Kai Luca Ampaw again in a tight 3 set match, Luca Pow losing to Matt rankin in 2 short sets - assuming due to the weather.

In Aldershott was a shame only one match but really good to see competition back in the UK regardless.

I think some of the first match losers got their second match in Aldershot before it snowed.

These match plays were set up for match practice, and seem to have partly replaced the so called closed itf junior events that were meant to be in loughborough and stirling. Probably to give the academy players matches and to draw in others who haven't been able to train in lockdown for them to play. Certainly on the girls side the u18 event didnt include anything like most of the top ranked players. It did have some, but with some in itfs overseas, but a much bigger number who will have sensibly decided that with no tennis in lockdown it is better to do more training and wait for some proper tournaments such as British Tours to play in.

Id like to think they were to benefit all players Not just academy players, otherwise they could have run it as an invitational event.

Yes some players missing I would have liked to have seen, either playing overseas or injured Or just choice?

Jasmine Conway, Eva Shaw, Ben Hudson, Fabio , imogen, Kyle Hughes, etc.

I think some of  the older end juniors 2003/2004 Will Nolan, Kylie bilchev  etc are away competing  in high level ITFs and some have done the pro series.

Injuries I know of are Henry Jefferson and Talia whos suffered a severe ankle sprain at Loughborough and is out of action for a few months.

Yes, Eva Shaw is the name who jumps out at me.

Jasmine, Fabio and Imogen have been abroad, playing ITF adults or juniors.

And so sorry to her about Talia - she's had plenty of problems with injuries, hasn't she?

But Eva seems to be completely AWOL - maybe injured?

In Tunisia, J3, the Moroccan contingent seem to have left early, leaving Will Jansen with a walkover win into the QFs

I think Talia has had two significant injuries since joining the academies. Wrist fracture and ankle, both Being accidents as opposed to tennis injuries.

Eva isnt injured and is training at Loughborough not  sure why not competing but my guess is the academy are following the none  travel rules for under 16s.  End of May hopefully she can compete in the ITFs again. huge Shame she was too young to do the pro series would have been a good addition to the event and also good match practice for her.

Goodness, I knew she'd been injured, but that's awful for poor Talia, and now a nasty sprain on top of everything.....

All the best to her.

In theory, yes, of benefit to all players who played. BUT my point was that the academy players will have had dispensation  to train throughout lockdown which many others (who may turn out to be more successful players in the end) didnt have the benefit of, as not classed as 'elite' by lta despite rankings being higher than some academy players. For those non academy players to travel for two matches of a grade 6 lta match play so soon after lockdown it was not at all a level playing field. From the top 20 lta u18 girls rankings (which does include itf points as well as lta points) only 3 players entered those 11th april match plays, which makes my point.  The entries for the next one, next weekend, are a bit stronger, as more players have had more training now as restrictions eased on the 29th march. These events, though u18 also have guaranteed places for under 16 players as well which is clearly an obvious way to make sure most academy players can actually get accepted as not all of them might have been high enough in the rankings otherwise. Many on this board are dubious at least about the merits of the lta academies but it is clearly in the interests of lta to make it at least appear that they are working for as long as possible. Not least to keep academy  players and parents happy, which is never easy in an individual sport where players are training in groups at times and in the end competing with each other. I should add I am mainly referring to the girls side which I know more about. Once we know if any of the current players have made it or not as tennis players those responsible for the academies will probably be gone...  I'm not commenting on individual players particularly, but I would say that there are a lot of non academy players, those going by different routes including us college, who still have ambitions of making it in tennis, and who is to say none of them will. In my opinion the whole academy set up has certain clear  disadvantages.

They're playing shorter sets in Tunisia to try and clear the backlog.

Will Jansen lost his QF 4-1 1-4 2-4
