Boys: J1 San Diego, USA, hard (Week 12)

A stronger field than in the Dominican Republic for this Grade 1, so Jack PJ is second seed. Top seed is Bruno Kuzuhara, one of two boys in the top 10 born after 2003 (the other being the Chinese lad Juncheng Shang, who pushed Liam earlier today in Miami)

R1 (L48)

(13) Derrick Chen bye

(2) Jack Pinnington Jones bye

Both scheduled to play today, though rain has caused a slight delay so far

R2

(WC) Alexander Razeghi (USA) v (13) Derrick Chen
Giulio Perego (ITA) v (2) Jack Pinnington Jones

Derrick retired early in the 3rd set and the lads also lost their doubles. Jack won though and is into the last 16

The doubles came after Derrick's singles, so his retirement probably isn't anything serious. He has been playing 7 weeks in succession, which may be a factor.

R2

(WC) Alexander Razeghi (USA) d. (13) Derrick Chen 4-6 6-4 1-0 rtd
(2) Jack Pinnington Jones d. Giulio Perego (ITA) 7-5 6-1

R3

(14) Azuma Visaya (USA) v (2) Jack Pinnington Jones

Little surprised to see none of the leading Brits in the big Easter Bowl event next week, jack would have been highly seeded again.

The Easter Bowl is a Grade B1 event - which means it is designed for residents in the region. Jack would be ineligible - the only non-US entry in the boys main draw is Juncheng Shang who is at the IMG academy

R3

(2) Jack Pinnington Jones d. (14) Azuma Visaya (USA) 6-3 6-3

QF

(WC) Ethan Quinn v (2) Jack Pinnington Jones

Jack went out to Quinn in 3 sets and leaves American shores empty handed

From Colette's blog (ZooTennis)

"I had a pretty good game plan going into the match," said the 17-year-old from Fresno California, who had gotten a scouting report from doubles partner Nicholas Godsick, a doubles opponent of Pinnington Jones earlier this month in the Dominican Republic. "He said to play the backhand more, it's not as fierce as his forehand. His forehand was able to pull me off the court pretty easily, honestly, but I neutralized that pretty well by going to the backhand."

Quinn said he took advantage of the windy conditions, while Pinnington Jones had problems adjusting.

"He was struggling a little bit with the wind, the wind was for sure tough," said Quinn, who trains with Brad Stine in Fresno, when Stine is not traveling with ATP pro Tommy Paul. "So I kind of used that to my advantage, forcing him to make balls, and he was getting frustrated with the wind. I kind of forced that, by putting indirect pressure, making balls. I wasn't making many unforced errors."

Top seed Kuzuhara scraped into the semis, so will extend his lead over Jack in the rankings.
