i cannot see six GB wild cards at the most perhaps four. ie Dart Jones Boulter and Swan the latter seems to have had a few wildcards for Wimbledon.

Wimbledon do give wild cards ro old favourites I thought perhaps Vera Zvonareva

At least Vera has been in reasonable  form in the last year. Kim Clijsters is yet to win a  match on her return.

I dont think its about form though, its about who adds value to the event from the tournaments perspective. Kim certainly does that and will get one wherever she wants one. Andy does the same in mens. To be fair, Vera may just tick that box I feel.

I have to be honest and say I don't think Kim merits a WC these days. Basically she hasn't won a match since 2012. I thought Laura ended her career at the 2012 US Open. We are in 2021 and not 2001 when Kim played in the French final.

but in a time of players with little high profile, to the general public, where the tabloids would only know one or two names (and outside of the Williams Sisters, how many?), Clijsters is a name with resonance and  "box office" appeal. I think if she wanted a wild card, they would give her one. I would

One thing to consider for those on the periphery of cut offs is points dropping off (assuming April 2019 ITF points are going to drop in line with WTA events). Naiktha has lost 10 of her last 14 matches stretching back to 2019 (3 of those 4 wins against a random UNR WC the other week, Naomi B, and a 700+ qualifier). I see she has 50 points dropping (from a combined 4 tournaments) by the end of May, and the way her results have gone, it's quite hard to see those being defended - she's even a 13/8 underdog against her WC opponent today.

She is pretty lucky though that her (weak) W25 title win in Mildura, won in early March 2019, IS staying on her ranking for another year, as if it was just a few weeks later, that would have been another 50 points dropping off. I think it's QWC at best for her personally. She did actually make Qs directly last year, and wasn't bumped up, although she had just switched 3 months prior.

You can't base the criteria on allowing people to play in slams solely on whether or not other people have heard of them. It has to be based on merit and the ranking system doesn't lie.

Dont agree. 104 places are by merit, 16 are qualies. But 8 Being kept for whatever reason I think it totally fine, thats the point of a wild card. Isnt about merit , and doesnt need to be transparent I dont feel. So long as payments arent taking place.

And to be fair to Wimbledon (not that I like it - I'd prefer all 8 to be taken up, even if half went to non-Brits), if they don't think one is justified, they will just go next in - five were handed back last time, and Harriet ended up being the only Brit to get one. Heather and Swiatek were initial picks before they weren't needed, which is in complete contrast to the US Open system last year - they had a list of about 20/25 Americans, and as and when a MDWC was no longer required, the WC would then go to the next player on the list, but even in non-Covid years, you'd rarely find a WC not being used up in the other slams.

Actually, Katie S might have got one as well, I'll have to double check that, but lots were handed back.

Yep, Harriet, Katie S, and Ilkley winner Niculescu were given the 3 WCs, the other 5 handed back.

I remember some on here (myself included) were quite happy when the Surbiton and Manchester W100 events were won by those already in the Wimbledon main draw to 'free up' MDWCs, as those wouldn't be required, but in hindsight, I'd have preferred a youngster like Caty McNally (Surb SF) to have won, and subsequently (almost certainly) secured her spot, if they were just going to hand them back anyway.

Precisely, sport is entertainment at the end of the day and Kim is still popular plus she is their go to for roof opening expo matches and there is a reason for that.

Thats a good point but works both ways, there will be players that miss out due to the massive bottleneck in the rankings.  Naiktha keeping those 50 points for 3 years is an absolute p*** take, not her fault but thats clogging things up for young players just making their way into the Seniors

I don't always agree with JonH, but today I think you are spot on - 104 places plus 16 qualies are on merit, and the wildcards are just who the committee wants to see - be that famous old players who want to be entered, young hotshots or Brits. Hopefully we will get 4 or 5 this year - I am sure that Harriet and Fran will get one, and almost sure Katie B will too - like others, I think Katie Swan may get one and possibly Emma, but I can't see them taking Jodie Burrage or any other of the lesser names, unless one of those players really goes on a run between now and June.
