RE: Wimbledon 2021 WCs - women

Wimbledon has a seniors competition so any big name from the past can still be seen in what would be a more competitive competition for them. Kim Clijsters since her second return hasn't shown she's at a level to play in the main draw but those who would pay to watch her could still do so (and frankly does Wimbledon ever not have a capacity crowd weather permitting?)

I think the thing is it is very subjective, but that doesnt detract from the fact it is part of the game and valid (unless one disagrees and feels it isnt valid!).

Ha, thankfully it isnt down to us and as has been shown many times in the past, they clearly don't read through our machinations and debates and take them into account - and why should they!

Read somewhere that there are no Wimbledon vets events this year.

It's on the Wimbledon website - "We will also not be staging the Invitation Doubles events in 2021,"

Welcome brendan to the minority

I've refrained from boring folk the last couple of years with fuller thughts but still doesn't mean I am in favour at all of Slam MD WCs. Slams are the sport's ultimate, a place in which to be aspired to and earned. Yes Jon, maybe no payments orher than err them receiving R1 prize money. There's better ways of funding GB players.

Again, it's a general Slam MD issue for me so I am not suggesting at all that GB players unilaterally should miss out. Thus the whole business will continue.

I agree pretty much completely with this. Slams are the ultimate highpoint and I'm rather tired of mediocrity being rewarded just because that player happens to come from that country.

The only exceptions I would make are for players perhaps coming back from long term illness or injuries who for whatever reason can't use a protected ranking and whose previous ranking would have been good enough to qualify or for women coming back from time off to have children, though I would limit that to say no more than 2 years.

I understand we give our players wild cards to help them financially but though I want them to succeed I don't really see why British players ranked in the 200s, for eg, should just automatically be given wildcard entry to the sport's top competition.

Surely Matilda will get a QWC given her steady progress in the past year?

It would be nice to see her play on the UK Pro League for a week to compare her development to the other British players.

Yes, I agree. However, the final tomorrow will give some idea as Lily Miyazaki is based in uk I think and last year and before has played lots of gb players but mainly the 500 to 1000ish ranked and a lot of unranked ones. Matilda has done virtually no domestic tennis in uk since she was probably 12 as she moved abroad, I think Belgium first and now Spain. This may partly explain why she is doing so well  of course.

The only time I saw Matilda play on TV was junior Wimbledon a couple of years ago and looked impressive even then.

Being based abroad presumably is why she's had so little coverage in the media compared to other British teenage players at the same age.

Venus Williams down to 90 on live rankings any further fall and she should require a WC

This is precisely why wildcards exist.

I don't think she will need one because her IW-Miami 2019 points have already come off and I don't think there's anything else to drop before her 105 at Rome (which will surely be after the cut off), whereas others in and around her will no doubt have more points coming off, as they would have generally been more active in smaller WTA / bigger ITF events around that period, but if she did hypothetically require one, then yes, she should really be the first name on the list, being a 5 x champion.

Her IW 2019 points are still there as they are for all players aren't they? They should have come off but won't for who knows how long. At least that is how I understood it.

Take those off and Venus would drop to around 115-120. About the same level to where she is in the WTA race for the year.

I think she will probably just about get in without one.

Meant to add she's nto really been that competitive for a while now. Possibly her last Wimbledon?

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if she picks the USO as her last tournament. She hasn't won two consecutive matches since Cincinnati in August 2019 - that's 15 tournaments and only five wins.
But wild cards for Wimbledon and the USO - most definitely !

Sorry yes, they are still on, and on for another year. I knew what I meant, and was just meaning the live rankings seem up to date in terms of what comes off up until now, but obviously came out very misleading, and wrong biggrin, but yes, she should just about sneak in without one, even with a potential barren initial clay spell.
