RE: Wimbledon 2021 WCs - women

I do wonder if Emma progresses further and at least one of the Birmingham or Nottingham winners doesn't need one, whether she will still be moved up to the main draw. She has Pironkova next in Nottingham, so if will be tough for her to progress further, but her results this week have been excellent, and for me the win against Babos today, indicates that she is very unlucky not to have got a main draw wildcard.

I keep seeing best wishes to Ace Ventura for still posting - hope you are not leaving the Forum Ace, and if so, what has prompted that? Sometimes things do get quite bitchy, so hope it isn't that - I think the problem with posting, as opposed to speaking or seeing someone directly, is that things innocuously said, sometimes come across differently to how they are meant to, and of course posts don't give you tone of voice or any of the other things you get from directly speaking to someone, and sometimes stuff gets taken wrongly or humour fails.

The problem with social media is that we lose the facial cues that give context or soften something so sometimes words can be construed in a way that was never the posters intention then it escalates from there.  I never take things personally on any forum, i give my opinion but I don't get offended when someone feels differently.  No disrespect to anyone on here but none of us would recognise a poster if they walked past us on the street so why get too bothered about what a stranger thinks.

I wouldn't at all criticise Emma not getting a Wimbledon MD WC when she had played so little before this week.

If she now can be and is upgraded fair enough though playing qualies may be no bad thing at all for her.

Hopefully it's no longer an issue next year.

Am I right though that the 2 remaining wildcards have been kept for possible winners or Nottingham and Birmingham?

Hear what you say Emmsie69 - but I see people who exchange views and opinions more as people who come together through a common interest, and then I happily admit that I do get upset when people say horrible things - I have only come to social media in the last couple of years, so I'm not really up with it, and I guess if you start to get upset, that is the time to come off and stop posting, which I did for a few months last year.

I just about agree with the wildcards, for what it is worth. I do think Emma needed to show some activity and form to get md wc, and I suppose now she may get one of the remaining ones if there is one. I strongly agree with not giving any more u18 players, other than Matilda, who has a wta ranking, and Eva, as winner of Nationals, qwc. If we want the nationals to have a high profile then this incentive is the way to do it. If the runner up got one this year then before you know it next year more of the top ones don't enter, especially if lta academy/favourites who have found out, or suspect, before the nationals that they might get one, or might if get to final but lose in final. I know the final was close, and kylie was ahead, 2 points away from winning at least once etc, but the wc was for the winner.

I'd agree with Spireman about any possible wildcard for Kylie IF we were up to a max on our wildcards.

BUT, given we have them to spare, AND it was so close, I would have preferred Kylie to get one. And any other junior or good case (GB or other).

As others have said, I'm not too concerned about Emma not getting a MD one. She has top funding at the moment, she's on the perfect trajectory to getting one next year, it's really not that important in the scheme of things this year. (That said, like the French, I would definitely have given her a MD one, but I don't think it's an issue that she wasn't).

NaomiOsaka has confirmed she will not play Wimbledon, according to the BBC. I'm not certain if anyone else is missing from the top rankings, but possibly one of the most significant effects would be to lift Iga Swiatik to #8 instead of #9.

I think there are doubts about Brady but otherwise the other top
30 womenn are still in. Osaka withdrawing I think should also ensure Badosa is seeded although I'm not sure how much of a threat on grass she will prove to be.

There was a quote in the article that the Wimbledon tournament director had told Osakas 'entourage' that right there might be the core of her issues. as I suspect that quite a few of her entourage is made up of a gang of hangers, it seemed an odd word to use.

I was just going to say it could also get that Paullow Badosa a seeding wink, although she can still get passed by 2 players this week. Yep, not too much hopes for Wimbledon, and she could easily lose to a number of 33-70 type players (who are more used to grass) if she does get a seeding, although it would still be nice for a little more protection, and a few extra perks.

Hi Andy. I'm not thinking of leaving, and no issues on my side, was just taking a little break, but I probably won't be quite as active going forward, and that's generally more to do with changing interests. Mind, with 9000+ posts in a little over 3 years (about 90% on this particular part of the forum alone), even if I reduced that post count by 66%, I'd still be one of the more active ones, ha.

No surprises regarding Osaka, I'd have been far more surprised if she had played, but still a bit of a blow for Wimbledon to get 2 of the biggest 5 or 6 names in the sport withdraw on the same day.

Looks like Emma has now been boosted up to a MDWC. Good stuff.

As in my view she should have been from the start.

Naomi and Jodie have been given a WC to doubles. Naomi had entered with Emma so perhaps missing off the initial WCs while Naomi found a new partner.
