RE: Wimbledon 2021 WCs - women

A very sensible post Bagel. I think broken down like that as you say the choices are spot on.

Just out of interest, when you say "The LTA set up the four pairs", what do you mean? That the LTA suggested who that group should partner with in light of game styles and so on, and then have helped facilitate some proper doubles training? I know in the past they've done pre-Wimbledon doubles camps with Cayer but that might have just been for the boys.

And they've updated the entry list to move Ozgen & Fetecau into qualies, so those 2 wildcards are definitely not being allocated.

This was the LTA's policy re dubs wildcards as announced before Nottm Week 1:

Appendix 3 Womens Doubles Wild Cards Number of wild cards: We have one doubles wild card at Nottingham 250, Birmingham 250 and Eastbourne 500 We may get a second wild card at Nottingham and Birmingham if there is no request from top 20 players on site We have 3 doubles wild cards at Nottingham ITF 100K Allocation of wild cards: We will be prioritising players who are committed to playing doubles throughout the year and achieving a relevant level of success for the events in question. We know that it isn't always possible to play doubles due to acceptance or scheduling reasons which we will of course take into account. The priority order will be: 1. British number one doubles player on WTA doubles rankings with a British partner 2. British player in the top 100 singles or doubles WTA ranking with a British partner 3. All British team with both players being in the top 250 WTA singles or doubles ranking and committed to playing doubles (defined as playing doubles in 40% of events where the player has played singles, within the current WTA ranking period, unless there is a clear reason why this hasnt been possible) 4. All British team with the highest combined ranking using WTA singles or doubles ranking (whichever is higher) 5. A British player with a regular foreign partner (regular meaning 5+ events together within the current WTA ranking period). However if the British player is ranked top 100 WTA doubles or higher then this team could be considered above a category 3 team In addition, we will also be nominating teams for wild cards into Wimbledon as per the normal process. Whilst the above will be taken into account when we are nominating teams, it has no impact on the decisions taken by the AELTC and is to support the allocation of wild cards into LTA run events only

Indiana, I didn't edit that bit actually - the bit I changed was actually that I misread your earlier post when you said that you were disappointed that all the qualifying wildcards weren't used and I had thought that you had said the main draw ones, and I had wrongly quoted you, so on one paragraph about Pironkova, I took out ''As Indiana says''.

It doesn't matter anyway - wildcards into qualifying are never a punishment, but I am sure that Katie S will look at Sam and Jodie getting main draw wildcards and will feel that if Sam and Jodie got one, she should have had one too.

Baffling decision to overlook Katie S in favour of Sam for a MDWC. The former won a W25 in Orlando in February before her injury troubles struck again, while the latter has only played three singles matches so far this year and lost them all.

Both women have in effect been bumped up 1 tier, Sam from qualies to MD, Katie from missing out to qualies, totally fair.

Still disappointed Olivia and Lissey didn't get one despite the latter winning two titles this year already.

THere will be quali doubles wildcards too, though, if everything is like normal

(Anyone read that doubles qualis are being cancelled?)

In which case, Olivia and Lissey would be ideal candidates for one there.

(If they don't maybe get bumped up? Would have done their cause some good if they'd done better in these past few weeks)

I think there are still some doubles WCs TBA.

Thanks. I did wonder about that. Can't see why not, really, if you've got normal qualis. But fine....

But makes sense then for the AELTC to hold off deciding about the final dubs WCs

I wonder if Venus and Serena might pair up this year.

Cannot see that happening Serena will be concentrating on singles and Venus might play doubles as she is a spent force with singles.

Glad Sam Murray one of my favourite players received a MDWC  Katie Swan has had several wild cards into MD but done nothing .

Jo has withdrawn from Eastbourne (wasn't sure where to put this!)

Katie Swan did have a good win, against Begu, I think, 3 years ago.

Usually post withdrawals in the entry lists. Given this her home tournament, this to me looks like knee management.

No-one has commented on Eva Shaw being given a qualifying wildcard. Is she any good?

All I know is that she is 16 years old and was a pretty good junior, but I have no idea of whether she deserves a qualifying wildcard.

Eva had to get one - she won the U18 nationals, the prize includes the qwc.
