Well, that's made me happy in some ways.

APART from the 'not used' quali singles widlcards.

I understand the 'not used' MD ones - it's rather high profile to put in players who really aren't up to the level, even if it is a learning curve or whatever (I mean, I'd put them in but I understand the argument fine not to)

But there's zero argument, in my view, not to use the quali wildcards.

However, pleased to see Jodie in the main draw. And Sam too.

And Katie in qualis (because it implies she's not too injured?)

Emma Rad in qualis is probably right too (although arguable)

PS Does anyone notice a rather sea change in the wildcards this year? In terms of our older players suddenly seeming to get recognised? For years, Sam and EWS and others were completely out in the wilderness (Em couldn't get a dubs WC for love nor money, and Sam was royally shafted that year she was in the ITF final).
But suddenly, they - and Tara - seem to be part of the chosen few.
I'm very happy to see it.

Yeah CD but why have they suddenly started giving out WC to Sam and EWS? Seems odd with their best days behind them....
Venus is only a few out of the MD, with withdrawals she would be in so interesting to see if that happens.

No real surprises in there. I am disappointed that they have decided already not to use the 2 main draw and 2 qualifying wildcards. Could they not have been left as TBA for another few days?

I don't see why they couldn't have got 4 players to do an unofficial playoff for the qualies ones (Beth, Emily, Kylie and another junior or Naomi, say).

Not allocating the singles wildcards actually means Venus is in without one, along with Sasnovich. So assuming it remains unallocated it goes to Puig or if she is out, Bolsova.

Benoit and Waltert are the two next in qualies.

Puig has had shoulder injury so she is out for the rest of the year so it should be Bolsova then.

Yes CD, seems odd that Em couldn't get a wild card when she was 150, British #2 and winning big challengers, but is this year. Perhaps they have 'softened' approach given pandemic disruption? But I note Naomi hasn't been given anything (she entered with Emma), perhaps she is moving to focus on her media career (and could perhaps appear with Liam in the mixed as a final match....?)

Although I said no surprises, I didn't really expect Sam to be rewarded, but she did make Q3 in 2019.

And agree with you on qualies. Why couldn't they give one to Kylie? I don't think it cheapens the reward for winning U18 nationals, it's an exceptional year with no pre-qualies. Or just hand them on ranking (which of available players would have been Em and Beth I guess, maybe that's why they didn't go that way!)

Pironkova is an obvious name missing for me. Wonder if they will reallocate Venus' wildcard to her?

Wouldnt the winner of the ITF Nottingham event this week expect a wild card? Have they removed that link, given the next direct acceptance above seems fairly final?

And if any of the girls in Nottingham has a great week, eg Matilda, could she expect an upgrade?

There definitely seems to be what you call a 'softening', whether to do with covid, not sure.

It's not just once either - EWS and Sam and Tara appear on various lists.

I noted Naomi's absence too but, like you, wondered if that was more to do with her priorities now.

In general, though, I am extremely glad that the older players are being recognised.

To me it is irrelevant that their best years are behind them (as emmsie says). Rather, it's a sign that the federation supports the whole tennis body, and doesn't just dump you if you're not top 100 material. That age discrimination is illegal. That younger players can take heart in the fact. I think it provides a good message to younger players and may well encourage them to stay in the sport, and makes the sport richer.

Tennis is a pyramid, and traditionally we haven't done enough to support the bulky block in the middle of the domestic game. The sort who are vital to building wider success (give up and comers targets, as well as good role models, provide quality competition). You want a really good group of career professionals in that Tier 3/4 275-550 range.

The £8,500 for qualifying round 1 losers is a big pay check, so it does feel an opportunity missed not to use that for a couple of the juniors starting to transition.

Maybe it's Sam and EWS last year on tour and they want to recognise that? Just a thought....

Interesting how they managed to use all the men's quals but not the women. What about the 2019 junior girl, is she in quals)MD by right?

Yes, not much surprise there and particularly no big negative surprises.

Slightly surprised but really pleased that Sam got a MD one after some past treatment. I could have seen Eden missng out on a Q one but it looks as if she has of late found just enough

One thing though I too dislike is unallocated Q WCs ( although I have no gripes on the unallocated MD ones with the cast this year ). The one other name I had wditten down, albeit with a "?" has already been mentioned twice above - Kylie Bilchev. Maybe stalled for a while but seems to have found some very decent form of late. Just - why not?

Perhaps Alicia & Olivia could have been given a doubles WC?

Interesting that the Wimbledon website has just updated to show the Main Draw wildcards as "To be announced".

Perhaps it was a mistake, it did seem odd they weren't holding one for the 100k winner.
