Other events, 2021 - week 6

In Turkey, J4, this week we have Matt Southcombe, Fabio Nestola and Joel Pierleoni

In Pakistan, J5, the trio from last week, Iman, Alaia and Raahim Agha. are back in action. And joined be Ellie Blackford.

Jaquelyn O should be in action again in Nicaragua, J5.

Just realised the juniors dont appear to be playing at the AO this year, probably should have realised that but I hadn't clocked it at all.

Not sure I agree or disagree, just noticed it really.

It was cancelled back in November (see this announcement) - they hope to reschedule, but that won't be easy to achieve this year I suspect

Turkey, J4:

R1: Wins for Fabio Nestola (over the 8th seed) and Joel Pierleoni, but Matt Southcombe lost.

Pakistan, J5:

R1: Iman carried on her good run, beating the 7th seed. So that's her, Alaia and Ellie all through to the second round.

Raahim got a win in the doubles, as did Iman+Eliie, and Alaia+Partner

(slightly strange that Iman and Alaia aren't playing together this week as they did last when they took the title??)

Nicaragua, J5:

Jaquelyn O (top seed) got an easy R1 win

Pakistan, J5:

R2 Girls:

A win for Iman, 6-0 6-1

And another nice win for 2006-born Ellie B, 6-3 6-3

But Alaia lost to the 5th seed.

The girls all lost their doubles too, but Raahim has made the semis in the boys' doubles.

Pakistan, J5:

An excellent result for 2006-born Ellie Blackford.

QFs:

Ellie Blackford def. 4th seed, 6-3 6-3

However, Iman lost 5-7 in the third and Raahim+ lost their dubs SF

Ellie B was a new name to me, getting some attention back in December when she had some good results in Zimbabwe.

She's got a tough ask now against the second seed. But if the 4th seed was easy-peasy, then why not the second seed too?

In Turkey, J4:

Joel P and Fabio N both lost their R2 singles matches, and Matt S+ lost in the QFs in the dubs, so all done and dusted....

Another disappointing end to the week for Jaquelyn O who, as top seed, went out in the QFs again, in Nicaragua, although in a very tight match.

SF: Ellie Blackford lost, 3-6 2-6, against the 2nd seed.

But a very good week for the youngster.

Again not sure why these juniors are travelling around the world to cat 4/5 junior ITFs  when the message from the government is to stay at home. Ellie had 2 weeks in South Africa  in December. Returning back to The uk and then after lockdown travelling to Pakistan only last week. Pictures of junior academies in Kenya on social media  no social distancing, group photo with coaches all very close contact with no masks only last week. The lta should be actively discouraging travel. these are junior tennis players not elite athletes making a living from tennis.

Agreed, does seem to go against all rules that have been set, no way it qualifies as elite sport at this level.

Yes I too have been surprised at how many juniors have been travelling this year to low grade junior events far afield (in some cases it may be that they are based abroad and subject to different government guidance/rules but not most).  Not sure it is the LTA's role to discourage travel, but they certainly shouldn't be actively encouraging it at present for players at this level.

My question is how are they even training?
Tennis is banned in the U.K. & has been for weeks, (unless elite pro performers)
Are they going unprepared to these far flung places?

Valid question. Ive asked the same thing - National academy players and NAGP players are allowed to train.

None of the recent events have included either of those categories.  It seems the national academies are not travelling to compete in recent weeks. When they do they do not seem to go to the far flung places you describe either And have entered the tougher events.
