Week 2 - Australian Open - women's qualifying (hard) (in Dubai)

And ditto ditto ditto to everything above.

Thrilled for her

NB Just to note also that France's Clara Burel qualified. She's born 2001 and is ex-junior no. 1, and has had a lot of attention as the next young star (until injury and Elsa rather came and stole her thunder)

She was also the focus of some twitter attention to highlight the huge help that some federations, and junior rankings, can be:

"Out of the 11 tournaments Burel played this year, 7 have been in France, where she got WCs to 6 of them, and a JE to the seventh. A player from Turkey, Denmark, etc. just won't get these chances time after time. It's tennis' "that which must not be named.""

In every match involving  UK players the lower ranked person got through.

Well done Fran. Hope she gets a good draw  and not  one of  the other 3 Brits . Babos, Errani have qualified along  with Olga Danielovic of whom great things were expected a couple of years ago.

Missed this this morning as had stayed up late to watch Cam!

Brilliant from Fran - and I am so very pleased for her. She has been a real breath of fresh air since tennis resumed and such an inspirational story too. Good luck to her in the main draw.

I've noticed him on my Timeline a few times over the years, he just generally comes across bitter IMO (hope it's not someone on here...).

Plus a poor example in Turkey. There might not be too many 'big' events (just 2 W25s last year), but it is literally one of the best countries for a young player to get their foot in the door - 14 ITF events in 2020 in the midst of a pandemic:

https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament-calendar/womens-world-tennis-tour-calendar/?startdate=2020

and 8 more already in 2021 up until the end of Feb:

https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament-calendar/womens-world-tennis-tour-calendar/?startdate=2021

8 local players in the main draw both last week and this week, and there was a 14 year old playing at the back end of last year.

Anyway, I'm pleased to see Clara come through (although would have liked to see her opponent come through as well in a different draw), she's had some really good wins since the restart, and I find her enjoyable to watch, but she does need to work on her 2nd serve.

A bit of trivia but Francesca and Naiktha were both born in Leeds.

Fran is in fact from Oxenhope near Haworth which is keighley as much as Leeds. Haworth Main Street is the famous Hovis hill, from the adverts, the steep cobbled street that they used in the tour de France when it came hear in 2014. Lovely countryside, keighley not so lovely though !

I got the Leeds bit from Wikipedia so not 100% reliable.

There is a big write up on Fran today by Simon Briggs in the Telegraph. He says she grew up in Leeds. Is that correct?

I checked a more a more reliable source which says Fran was born in Keighley as you say. Keighley is far closer to Bradford, Halifax and a town I like in that area Skipton  than Leeds. Leeds  is  20 miles from Keighley. At ,least my more reliable source still gives Naiktha as being born in Leeds.

As before, she is near Leeds...Oxenhope is near Haworth and that is nearest to Keighley. Keighley is sort of between Leeds and Bradford. Leeds is fine if you want to generalise, other folks have said Bradford! It is all pretty close and to the reading audience Leeds is as good as anywhere!!

More importantly she is from Yorkshire and that is all that really matters!!

Keighley is actually a very deprived area relatively; Leeds is a big city as we all know and has some lovely suburbs and some not so lovely. I dont actually like Leeds City Centre, it isnt a pretty place, but as you head to the Northern suburbs like Chappel Allerton, Roundhay, Moortown, Meanwood, there are some very affluent suburbs and areas and we (in normal times) go there quite a lot. Leeds Grammar School is on that edge and then you head out into open country and off to Harewood, from which you head slightly west towards Otley and Ilkley and North towards Harrogate and into North Yorkshire, all probably 20 mins or so from Leeds itself. Bradford is near to Ilkley and Harrogate and probably a similar distance from both and effectively starts to morph into Leeds and Keighley ditto between Bradford and Leeds. It is all a mix of urban sprawls in some very rugged and beautiful countryside and the towns and cities are typically very hilly and rugged.

Over to the east from Harrogate is York, from here and Leeds it is about 30-45 mins to York and the 3 places form what is often known as the golden triangle - the towns in the triangle formed by Leeds, York and Harrogate tend to be affluent and property quite expensive, places like Wetherby, Boston Spa, Collingham, Tadcaster (the brewery town for John and Sam Smiths ).

Folks in Harrogate and Ilkley tend to be commuters to Leeds or even to London, we have a lot of Londoners who own properties in Harrogate and (illegally) decamped here in December when London went into Tier 4 - Harrogate was in Tier 2 for a long time but now is seeing dramatic increases - cases where around mid 80's per 100000 in mid December and we are now up to nearly 500 as the new Covid variant has reached here.

Unfortunately I was born in Lancashire and we don't seem to have any current tennis players to get excited about.Liverpool is the birth place of 2 Wimbledon doubles champions in the late Angela Buxton and Jonny Marray. But I think Jonny Marray moved to Sheffield.

Yeah, we claim Jonny Marray as one of ours

You have Ken and Neal Skupski though!! And isnt Emily Appleton Lancs, her Dad certainly was (Mike).

I'd forgotten about the Skupskies.Although of course all Liverpool's players with the exception of Angela Buxton from the 1950's concentrated mostly on doubles. Emily Appleton although she had a promising junior career has yet to register on  the  senior tour. Actually I think in retrospect  the  promising Marni Banks comes from Bolton. Sarah Beth Gray  I think  was  born in Liverpool. One  write up  on Fran in the Daily Mail by Mike Dickson made me laugh but for the wrong  reason. In the factfile it gives her birthplace as Leeds.  However in the main write up Fran is from Bradford!  Neither fact is correct.
