Boys & Girls: J1 Plovdiv, Bulgaria, clay (Week 42)

Jack Pinnington Jones has a tough draw against the top seed Dali Blanch (brother of US pro Ulises) .  The girls event is a day behind, with Millie Bissett and Eva Shaw possibly in the main draw.  Kylie Bilchev lost in qualifying, which remarkably includes JWR 3 Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva

Boys R1 (L32)

(1) Dali Blanch (USA) v Jack Pinnington Jones

Eva and Millie have avoided the quarter of the draw with the Andorran prodigy, but Millie still lands a top 50 ranked seed.

Boys R2

Jack Pinnington Jones v (Q) Konstantin Zhzhenov (RUS)

Girls R1 (L32)

Eva Shaw v Sabina Zeynalova (UKR)
Amelia Bissett v (4) Madison Sieg (USA)

Two winners today, with a notable success for Millie. Eva's opponent is top 100 and reached a Grade A semi earlier in the year, so understandably couldn't make it a complete sweep

Boys R2

Jack Pinnington Jones d. (Q) Konstantin Zhzhenov (RUS) 6-1 6-3

QF

Jack Pinnington Jones v (16E) Peter Benjamin Privara (SVK)

Girls R1 (L32)

Sabina Zeynalova (UKR) d. Eva Shaw 6-4 6-1
Amelia Bissett d. (4) Madison Sieg (USA) 5-7 7-5 6-3

R2

Petra Marcinko CRO) v Amelia Bissett

Jack's scoreline has been upgraded, and he is in the doubles semis. Millie couldn't build on her impressive round 1 though

Jack makes it to both finals. In singles he plays a Belgian who has been a familiar opponent for Brits of late. Jack beat him comfortably en route to a Grade 2 title last month.

Doubles SF

Melgar/Pinnington Jones (ESP/GBR) d. Privara/Tokac (SVK/TUR) 2-6 7-6(5) [10-3]

Fabulous tournament for Jack. By my math he's due a rather large rankings jump, particularly once you remove all of the '02 boys at the end of the year.

Grade 1 tournaments only earn Grade 3 points until the end of the year, so he won't be near the top 50 yet (but should be in the top 50 when the 2002 boys come off)

Doubles F

  Fajta/Velcz (HUN) d. Melgar/Pinnington Jones (ESP/GBR) 6-1 7-6(2)

Apologies that I was going from the original announcement about rankings in August which said "However, a maximum of Grade 3 (J3/B3) ranking points will be awarded in 2020. Any tournament scheduled for 31 August-31 December 2020 that is Grade 2 or better (JA, J1, J2) will be given Grade 3 (J3) ranking points in 2020. "

Having seen that Jack has in fact been given the full 300 points for a Grade 1 win, and hence a large rankings rise into the top 50 (see the rankings thread) I now discover that at some point the original statement has been reviewed and the following added "Upon review, the Juniors Committee has approved the reinstatement of full points at Grade A (JA) and Grade 1 (J1) tournaments subject to high levels of player accessibility."

Clearly Plovdiv has been deemed to meet that criterion (unlike the previous Grade 1 in Serbia), and Jack is the first beneficiary of the change in heart at Grade 1 level.

Meanwhile the girls final resulted in a comfortable win for Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva
