General cricket thread

So sad to wake up to the news of the passing of Graham Thorpe today. He was just 55yo and although it comes as a shock, his sudden disappearance from the public eye and the subsequent radio silence, suggested that he was seriously ill.

In our younger days, I had the pleasure of knowing Graham personally. I played both cricket and football against him and his brothers. He was such a down to earth guy with a very dry sense of wit.

I remember one particular game of football which was nothing more than Sunday morning league. It was like playing "Thorpe United". Graham and his brothers Ian and Alan both played, his dad reffed and his mum cut the oranges. Graham had just been selected for his first England A tour and was due to leave shortly afterwards. I asked him if he should be playing and what the ECB would say if he got injured. He simply said, "I'll just tell them I fell down the stairs. You have to live your life regardless". Those words are very poignant today of all days.

RIP Graham and condolences to your whole family.

Down in the Costa del Sol at the Cartama Cricket Oval this week. Some tremendous cricket going on in the European Cricket Network "Weston Shield". It's a T10 slogathon really not quite like more traditional cricket but a good standard and a bit of fun.

The most famous player participating this week is former NZ captain Ross Taylor.

Had the privilege of watching a batter hit 6 * 6s in an over, live. Not sure I'll ever see that again. Max O'Dowd who plays for Holland managed it in the 6th over of a run chase for Europe against Asia under the floodlights.

If you hunt through this youtube video, you can enjoy it too. It's towards the end in the floodlit match.

The European Cricket Network is growing rapidly and supported by Dream11 - sponsors of the Indian National Team who stream it in Asia and regularly have 5m+ viewers.

Check it out here.

Ha, I was thinking, so someone interested in the Champions Trophy. But in fact much more interesting!

If anyone doesn't like the hosts, can they play their matches in Dubai instead?
