Week 32 - UK Pro Series Classic Week- St George's Hill, Weybridge - (Hard)

Beth thoroughly deserved that first set, a lot less errors than the majority of the week, and a few more than I was expecting from Emma. Really well matched until 2-2 in the second, but then more Beth errors did creep in, and Emma's level gradually rose. Nice to see Emma come back from a match where she was struggling, but in terms of the group, if there was any chance she'd top the group, that's pretty much all gone, as Jodie just needs a set against Nadia. Plus she'd have been on court longer than he was expecting at the start of the day, with the now almost certain SF with Harriet in mind.

Beth still has a chance of 4th, but not if Eliz can nick one set off Emily Ap later, and Nadia is just about still in the equation, for now.

Sonay took the first set against Freya, so Freya can't finish top 2 now, and Eden vs Naomi is a winner take all later. If Sonay takes the second set then she'll be in the 5-8 playoffs, and Freya in the 9-12, but if Freya takes it, then it's the other way round.

Sonay took that second set and won 6-4 7-5 to finish 4th, relegating Freya to 5th and the lowest playoffs. Freya went from being fairly well placed for 2nd heading into that MTB with Naomi last night, to 5th place within 3 sets.

Jodie has taken the first set 6-2 against Nadia, so assuming the match is complete, she will definitely finish top and avoid Harriet tomorrow. She's 3-0* in the second as well.

Emily Ap is 5/6 to beat Eliz 2-0, so it will be similar odds for any other outcome (2-1, 1-2, 0-2), so as it stands, Eliz and Beth are pretty much 50/50 as to who will finish 4th, but it's in Eliz's hands to take the one set she needs to secure that spot and the higher playoff bracket.

No set for Eliz as Emily wins 1 & 2

Pretty comfortable for Emily Ap, 6-2 6-1, so that really hard fought first set by Beth this morning ultimately secured 4th place for her. She and Eliz have been pretty well matched in their H2H matches here, think it's 2-2 and all of them have been fairly close, but Beth is generally much more competitive against the 300-650 type players, and never gets overwhelmed.

So the women's placings are all sorted now, bar that Eden-Naomi match coming up soon. The winner of that plays Jodie in the SF tomorrow, the loser plays Beth in the 3rd / 4th match.

Edit 1 and 2, as TA says.

Who is this man who's unnecessarily joined the commentary team? All he does is say the score and the players' ages...

So Eden 6-1 3-6 10-2 over Naomi, so the SFs are set:

A1 Harriet vs B2 Emma
B1 Jodie vs A2 Eden.

The 4 highest ranked players. I'm sure Harriet will have something to say, and maybe Eden as well, and I'm admittedly biased, but I personally hope we get to see Jodie vs Emma in Sunday's final.

I think their rivalry has been a focal point of the women's Summer domestic period, from their first final at the opening BT event, to their shared victories in high profile matches at the BotB, and then obviously their group decider yesterday. They are 2-2 over the last couple of months, all of them close, I think 3 went to a MTB, so I think it would be quite fitting if their possible final domestic meeting (I know there's a few more BT events) was to decide the $20k windfall. I suppose there is a chance they could end their mini rivalry in the 3rd / 4th match, but that wouldn't be as satisfying biggrin

Hopefully 2 decent matches.

Good article by Stuart Fraser in The Times today about this tournament. Probably behind the paywall though

Interesting (I still had free articles remaining), especially the latter part about the people behind it looking to do something next year to help set players up for the year. Obviously no ranking points, but plenty of money and match practice for those who do well, and it could also act as a decent alternative to the lack of home W15s as far as the 700+, and more competent UNR players are concerned. Promising.

I love this idea of 9 weeks scattered through the year.

I also think the ITF could consider an adapted version for 15ks, which are supposed to be developmental - for instance, you could start the week with 8 boxes of 4 players as a round Robin, with the top 2 from each box progressing to the R16. That way every player would be guaranteed at least 3 matches.

Here's the section about future plans

We dont want this to be a one-off tournament during this Covid-19 situation, Hayes said. We are planning to create a nine-week tournament series across the season, starting at the end of February and ending around the beginning of November, scheduled in conjunction with the LTA and through consultation with the players and other tennis rights owners to make sure it complements the British tennis calendar.

This would then enable the players to earn money and hopefully turbocharge their ability to participate on the international tour for ranking points. We want to be able to crown the UK Pro Series champion each year and to have meaning within the tennis calendar. We are working on that now and will hopefully nail that over the next couple of months for next season. The players are very keen to see this in the future.

How do people see Harriet vs Emma going a little ? A couple of days ago I'd have said Emma (although if she had beaten Jodie the fixture wouldn't be happening today), but I'm kind of leaning more the other way now a bit more now, especially with the match time against Beth yesterday.

Most bookies have them both 5/6, so a real 50/50 in that respect.

I'm looking forward to it. In contrast to Emma-Jodie (and Harriet-Jodie), these haven't met this summer, and not since Manchester 2018, when Emma was just 15.
