Extract from an article by Charles Bremner in today's Times reporting on Emmanuel Macron's capitulation to the US State Department, which had refused to approve the French diplomat he had appointed as his country's ambassador to the US, & eventual apology, through the French foreign ministry, for a post on X by the French mission to the UN in Geneva ("The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore. Today, it stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali and Russia, isolated. And the world no longer listens to it."):
Tension has also been raised by the actions of the US ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, the property developer father of Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and envoy.
Kushner Sr, 72, who has little knowledge of France or its language, has attacked domestic policy, accused the country of tolerating antisemitism, criticised Macron and supported the political hard right. He has also twice refused to obey summonses to the foreign ministry for a dressing-down, showing "apparent incomprehension of the elementary expectations of the ambassador's role", according to the ministry.
What the article omitted to mention, but was pointed out by a contributor to the comments section for the article, is that Charles Kushner:
[...] pleaded guilty to 18 federal counts, including tax evasion and retaliating against a federal witness, served time in prison, was pardoned by Trump and then rewarded with an ambassadorship.
All that said, Macron's appointee, Aurélien Lechavallier, is a close friend from his time at ENA (Ecole Nationale d'Administration, the elite establishment, which used to train high-ranking French civil servants & many of France's political & business leaders, but was recently abolished & replaced by a "socially diverse" institution)... Nepotism rules, OK?
In other news, the Guardian among others reports that "Donald Trump is facing a rare backlash from the US Congress as Democrats and some Republicans push for guardrails on the world's most powerful AI companies."
On social media he describes such anxieties as "HOAX" and "conspiracy".
"The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!"
AI, global warming etc etc etc, this man is a danger to mankind.
2 and a bit years left folk ... ( though many would be extremely concerned about even just a year with no serious attempt at strong outside the industry AI regulalation ).
